Dr. Steadman is a renowned physicist and educator who spent over 40 years conducting research and teaching higher education. Joining the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1972, he began his career as a senior research associate before advancing into the roles of assistant and associate professor, senior research scientist and assistant director of science administration for its laboratory for nuclear science. Dr. Steadman subsequently spent an additional five years as the associate director of the laboratory for nuclear science before retiring in 2011. In addition to his priorities in the laboratory and the classroom, he supervised the research of several graduate students.

During his tenure at MIT, Dr. Steadman took a hiatus to serve as the program manager for the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), between 1998 and 2002, and as the senior nuclear physics adviser from 2004 to 2006. During an earlier stage of his career, he gained experience as a visiting scientist at Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany between 1969 and 1971 and as an instructor at the University of Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany, from 1971 to 1972. Outside of his primary career endeavors, Dr. Steadman was instrumental as a co-spokesman for an experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, between 1992 and 1994 and as a program director of nuclear physics for the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia, from 1994 to 1997.

Dr. Steadman has contributed numerous scholarly articles to scientific journals as a seasoned scientist. He notes much of his success to having great teachers, mentors, colleagues and students who were very supportive of him. He was also fortunate to have earned an excellent education. Finding constant inspiration in his parents, Dr. Steadman's father was a physicist and a university professor, and his mother was a chemist.

In retirement, Dr. Steadman has continued to contribute to his local community as a member and captain of the Watertown Provincial Guard since 1998. He previously served on Watertown's Arsenal Reuse Committee and held several lay leadership positions at his local Episcopal Church.

Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Steadman received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Rochester in 1964. Dr. Steadman then attended Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where he earned Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in 1966 and 1969, respectively.

To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Dr. Steadman has benefited from membership with several key professional organizations, as a fellow of the American Physical Society and member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
