An expert in mathematics and statistics, Dr. Romberg has earned recognition as the Bascom professor of education and professor emeritus in the department of curriculum and instruction at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Joining the university in 1967, he garnered more than four decades of experience as a member of the faculty. During his tenure, Dr. Romberg was fortunate to work alongside several talented colleagues and graduate students and supervise over 100 doctoral students.

Dr. Romberg formerly served as the director of the National Center for Research, Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, U.S. Department of Education, which has been recognized as the first research center to focus on teaching and learning mathematics. He also chaired the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Commission on Standards for School Mathematics and chaired a group of professionals in mathematics education that was responsible for establishing curriculum evaluation standards in 1989. Additionally, Dr. Romberg had the opportunity to serve as a Fulbright fellow to the USSR, as a National Science Foundation (NSF) visiting professor at the University of Delhi, a research fellow at the University of Tasmania, and a Spencer fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.

Recognized as an award-winning writer, Dr. Romberg has contributed extensively to his field. To wit, he contributed to the writing of several books, such as "The Impact of Reform Instruction on Student Mathematics Achievement," research articles, including "Perspectives on Scholarship and Research Methods" and chapters to scholarly works authored by his colleagues, like "A Common Curriculum for Mathematics." Additionally, Dr. Romberg has given numerous talks to mathematics education groups throughout 50 different countries, mainly on the topic of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. He also volunteered his time to the NSF in 2008 by assisting in reviewing universities in South Africa as they were trying to merge teachers from black colleges into several state colleges.

Dr. Romberg is an alumnus of Omaha University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and a Master of Science in secondary education. He subsequently received a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics education at Stanford University. To remain aware of changes in his field, Dr. Romberg is an active member of the NCTM, the Mathematical Association of America, and the International Group of Psychology of Learning Mathematics. He is also recognized as a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Receiving several significant accolades for his work, Dr. Romberg received a Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, was named as the Mathematics Educator of the 20th Century, and received the International Distinguished Leadership Award in Mathematics Education from the University of South Africa. Dr. Romberg also received a Lifetime Achievement Medal from the NCTM and, among other accolades, won the Research Review Award from the AERA.
