Before embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Hauck earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in 1975. Fostering ambitions for a career in the biomedical field, he continued his education, obtaining a Master of Science in microbiology from the University of Kentucky in 1979, as well as a Master of Science in environmental and occupational health from Hunter College in 1989. Seeking further specialization, Mr. Hauck is actively working toward a Doctor of Public Health in environmental and occupational health from the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy.
Beginning his career as a research assistant at the Weill Medical College (Cornell), Mr. Hauck was urged by the head of the department of human genetics to consider taking an open position as an environmental safety officer. Discovering his passion for the profession, he committed 20 years to the position until signing on as the biosafety director for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In tandem with his role as the director, Mr. Hauck also serves as an adjunct professor at Hunter College, a part of the City University of New York system, for the medical laboratory sciences program.
Among his career accomplishments, Mr. Hauck is particularly proud to have organized the institutional biosafety program, as well as establish the institutional biosafety committee at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, bringing the institution into compliance with the National Institutes of Health's biotechnology requirements. He was also integral in securing funding from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai's grants and contracts office in order to conduct routine surveillance on all active research, identifying risks and hazards.
Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Mr. Hauck has been the recipient of several accolades. In 2015, he was bestowed with the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Leadership Award and recognition as the chair of the Biosafety and Environmental Microbiology Committee. The AIHA also awarded him for his outstanding service as the chairman of the Biosafety Committee, and recognition for fulfilling the mission of the top outstanding committee in 2001.
Recognized as an expert in his field, Mr. Hauck has been invited by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) to contribute to the Bioaerosol Manual, as well as review and revise the American Industrial Hygiene Association's biosafety reference manual. In the near future, he intends to continue publishing and submitting articles for the AIHA newsletter, The Synergist.
