Rev. Atwater began his ministerial career in 1969 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the mountains of North Carolina. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mars Hill College in 1970, he returned home to Chapel Hill, NC where he served as pastor of McDuffie Memorial Baptist Church from 1970 to 1976. After completing a Master of Divinity degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1973, and the Chaplains School Basic Course in 1975, he entered active duty in May 1976. During the course of his subsequent 30-year military career, noteworthy assignments included duty as Wing Chaplain for the Second Marine Aircraft .Wing; Director of Plans, Programs and Professional Development for the Navy's Chief of Chaplains; Force Chaplain for the Chief of Naval Education and Training; Head, Chaplain Program Development at Naval Education Professional Development & Technology Center, Director of the Naval Chaplains School, and Regional Chaplain for Navy Region Gulf Coast.
During his Naval service, Chaplain Atwater earned recognition as a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Navy Chaplains Corps Advanced Course, and was designated as a Master Training Specialist by the Chief of Naval Education and Training in 1989. One of his proudest achievements was negotiating installation of a virtual classroom at Naval Education and Training Center Newport which eventually served the entire NETC complex, saving both travel time and thousands of dollars annually in travel costs. Over the course of his career, he was awarded two Navy Commendation Medals, three Meritorious Service Medals, and four Legion of Merit Medals.
Since military retirement, Rev. Atwater has served as Senior Pastor of Antioch Baptist Church near Chapel Hill, NC, and as a volunteer chaplain for the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
