Drawing inspiration from the example of her grandfather, a wine lover who began in the field with a small venture that started in his basement, Ms. Horton joined the family business – Horton Vineyards. Since its inception in the 1990s, Horton Vineyards has grown grapes with thicker skins and loose clusters, which thrive in the Virginia humidity. Her grandfather became well-known for bringing grapes into the state that are now considered staples, including the Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Albariño, and Petit Manseng.
Supported by years of experience in the industry, Ms. Horton presently excels as a winemaker with Horton Vineyards. While her grandmother oversees viticulture, her mother serves as the general manager, and she manages the cellar. Having developed a deep and abiding passion for her work, she decided to remain active with the company in order to help her family manage the business.
An expert in her field, Ms. Horton holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Keiser University. Due to her outstanding work and the success of Horton Vineyards, she has been featured in such publications as The Washington Post, C-ville Weekly, Virginia Living and Garden & Gun. While her career has been filled with standout moments, she is most proud of how she and her team have handled the company amidst the pandemic. Despite its small crew of five, they brought in nearly 400 tons of product and fostered a successful harvest.
