A subsidiary of the Southern Company, the organization operates nuclear assets in Alabama and Georgia and is building the first new nuclear units in the country in over 30 years. She leads the company's internal and external communication efforts, and with her team, is responsible for developing strategies that support business objectives using original, high-quality content, intentional messaging, strategic networking and partnerships, and effective leadership. This includes work to inspire and align a workforce of approximately 4,000 employees while also advancing national favorability of nuclear energy, which accounts for over half of the country's clean energy production.
Her team's work is recognized nationally by Ragan and has been shared as an industry best practice by the Nuclear Energy Institute and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations.
Lizzy has a passion for leadership development and has made continuous improvement a priority both for herself and her team. In addition to teaching Effective Leadership Communication quarterly to new leaders across her company, she has recently contributed leadership modules to the U.S. Women In Nuclear (WIN) and the Alabama chapter of Public Relations Society of America.
Lizzy previously served as Communications Manager for Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power, where she led the company's public relations efforts, including supporting the acquisition of more than 3,600 MW of clean energy across 29 wind, solar, and natural gas facilities from California to Maine.
Before joining Southern Company, Lizzy gained valuable experience leading marketing and sales initiatives for a variety of clients and industries, including fashion, fast food, performing arts, defense, wellness, and not-for-profits. She is a seasoned media spokesperson who has earned media coverage on CNN, Fox News, National Public Radio, The Associated Press, The New York Times, Forbes.com, The Washington Post, SHAPE, and more.
Dedicated to her community, Lizzy serves the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, the Women's Foundation of Alabama and The Birmingham Zoo.
Ms. Yates earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication, information sciences and public relations with minors in English and political science from the University of Alabama. Similarly, she completed the executive development program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
In a career filled with highlights, when reflecting on her work accomplishments to date, Ms. Yates is most proud of her team at Southern Nuclear and the recent recognition of their hard work.
