With more than 30 years of experience to his credit in counseling, Mr. Patterson has found success as a psychotherapist in his online private practice. In this capacity, he serves those who are struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues. As part of these efforts, he administers an online group called "Buddhists in Recovery," which caters to Buddhists around the world seeking recovery from alcoholism and mental health challenges.
Outside of his primary career efforts, Mr. Patterson is a host for the Mindful Vibes podcast, which he started in 2021 to help facilitate the sharing of thoughts, feelings and observations through practicing mindfulness. He has been a licensed therapist with BetterHelp.com since 2020 and a mindfulness meditation teacher for Cornerstone Yoga, LLC since 2021. He also volunteered his expertise as a yoga and mindfulness meditation instructor to benefit those in his community, for which he was interviewed by local media.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Patterson began his career as a clinic director for CREOKS Health Services and then served as a co-occurring therapist for the Red Rock PACT program. He subsequently was a program director at the Parkside Psychiatric Hospital & Clinic until becoming an adjunct professor for Bacone College, Tulsa Community College, Rogers State University, the University of Oklahoma and Langston University. Mr. Patterson continues as an adjunct professor in the Department of Human Relations where he has a passion to teach and help develop aspiring therapists.
Mr. Patterson was a community-based therapist for Dayspring Behavioral Health Services based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from 2003 to 2009. He served as a residential counselor for 12 & 12, Inc. between 2009 and 2011 until acquiring a role as a crisis intervention specialist for Mental Health Services of Southern Oklahoma in 2011. In 2013, he worked as the clinical director for the Recovery Center through 2019.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Patterson earned a Master of Science in human relations at the University of Oklahoma in 1989. Well qualified in his profession, he is a licensed professional counselor and a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. He found his passion for the mental health field after working at a state mental hospital in Norman, Oklahoma, with a friend. He took the time to listen to the stories of patients and was inspired by their improvements over time.
Mr. Patterson is currently working on implementing a holistic approach to mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy that he developed through his multifaceted work in meditation, yoga and the mind-body connection. He enjoys sharing his experiences in these areas with his patients and will continue to utilize this approach. His ultimate goal is to teach people how to be self-sufficient in managing their mental health by providing them with tools for acquiring a new positive mindset, helping them become aware of their influence over their psychological well-being.
