He formed the Irvington Public Safety Explorers, which is still in existence today.

July 2014, John Brown was the Director of the Irvington Fire Department and notably became the first African American director to ever serve in the history of the Township. In 2017, at the request of the mayor he accepted the role of Deputy Director of Public Safety for the Township of Irvington, New Jersey. Among a myriad of responsibilities, he oversees the budget, coordinates with the Public Safety Director, and fire chief with regards to facilitating daily operations, and regularly interacts with the mayor and councilmembers to ensure that fire and police equipment is readily available.
When he was a child, Mr. Brown lost his grandmother to a vehicular accident that involved a fire truck. This tragedy has such a profound effect on him that he wanted to become a firefighter in order to implement safety procedures to ensure that no one else would suffer the same fate. In his current role as Deputy Director, Mr. Brown particularly enjoys being able to positively impact the lives of the children as well as working with the Senior Citizens throughout the community.
Since becoming active in Irvington, Mr. Brown was instrumental in establishing Youth for Vauss, a program that focused on teaching children about careers in public safety. He subsequently formed the Irvington Public Safety Explorers, which is still in existence today. Proud of the success of these programs, many of Mr. Brown's former students have gone on to either serve in the military or acquire careers in public safety.
Accruing a long and successful career in public service, Mr. Brown notably served as a firefighter in the state of New Jersey from 1991 to 2016. He also served as a public information officer for a local fire department, as the captain and battalion chief for the Newark Fire Department, as the fire director for the Irvington Fire Department, and as Office of Emergency Management Coordinator. He is the point of contact and the liaison for the Township for all disasters.
Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Brown has been active as a school board member and as the founder of the John Brown Civic Foundation, a nonprofit organization that he formed in 2012 to revitalize the neighborhood. Additionally, he is a member of the NAACP and the Vulcan Pioneers of New Brunswick.
As a result of his professional achievements and leadership, Mr. Brown has been the recipient of several community awards. In addition to maintaining a strong adherence to his faith, his family and his country, he attributes his success to always giving 100% in every aspect of his life.
