With more than five decades to his credit in a variety of industries, Mr. Day has found success as an author, genealogist and researcher. Now self-employed, he focuses his efforts on genealogy and working as a family historian, aiming to remind people of the importance of working well with others and getting along together. He has written four award-winning journal articles about his genealogical research and authored "The Heritage of African Americans in Long Beach," "History Lessons" and "Locating Free African American Ancestors: A Beginner's Guide."
Outside of his primary career efforts, Mr. Day serves as a volunteer and lecturer for the Long Beach Public Library and is a member of the board of directors for the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library. He is the first and only African American man to sit on this board and was honored with a Mary Dell Butler Volunteer of the Year Award in 1999 for his service. He has lectured at the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society in Washington, DC, which is the leading African American genealogical and historical organization in the United States. He is a member of the Long Beach chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and has formerly served as the vice president for the African American Heritage Society of Long Beach and the Questing Heirs Genealogical Society.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Day worked as a Friden Flexowriter operator and instructor for Sunset House from 1964 to 1969. He was subsequently an accounting supervisor for Alpine Electronics and served as the commissioner for Long Beach Parks and Recreation. During his time with Alpine Electronics, he was honored with a Dealer Award of Excellence in 1983 for his stellar work. He has also received two Letters of Commendation from former First Lady Barbara Bush.
While embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Day earned an Associate of Arts in accounting from the Los Angeles Trade Technical College in 1975 and attained a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Phoenix in 1995. He began his work as a genealogist and historian in 1998 after working as an accountant, starting with his own family's origins and branching out to help various organizations. Looking toward the future, Mr. Day plans to continue his work while also spending time with his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
