After first pursuing an engineering degree in college, Mr. Johnston transitioned to the study of jewelry making. Mr. Johnston's passion for design began in his early teen years when he was taught the art of scrimshaw by his uncle, who was a well-established knife maker. Drawing inspiration from the artistic designs of his uncle, from whom Mr. Johnston attributes much of his success, he ultimately earned his diploma in Jewelry- Diamond Setting and Design from Gem City College in 1998. At the age of 21, he started Johnston's Trade Shop servicing watches and clocks for several retail jewelry stores in Southern Illinois. In 2003, he purchased a small three showcase jewelry store and named it Johnston Jewelers. By 2006, Mr. Johnston tripled the size of this location and added grandfather clocks to his inventory. In 2008, Johnston Jewelers moved to its' current location where it has had the opportunity to expand exponentially and successfully operate today.
Mr. Johnston holds relevant credentials, including certification in stone setting and diamond grading. In addition, he is also certified in clock and watch making. Mr. Johnston consistently maintains vital industry networks through memberships with the Jewelers Board of Trade (JBT), the Retail Jewelers Organization (RJO), and his local Chamber of Commerce. The personable, professional image Mr. Johnston holds earned him the "2005 New and Emerging Business Owner of the Year" award and countless times of recognition as Johnston Jewelers continues to build its legacy.
Among his career highlights, Mr. Johnston is particularly proud to have achieved and sustained success in his entrepreneurial venture. His independent store is thriving and enjoys a solid regional following. Looking toward the future, he aspires to build a more refined and advanced web presence so that he can ultimately cater to business nationwide.
