Mary E. Gilmer MD, FAAOS Shines as an Orthopedic Surgeon

As an orthopedic surgeon and a foot and ankle specialist with OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports, Dr. Mary Gilmer brings decades of medical expertise to her patients.

When Dr. Gilmer was a child of 6, she was involved in a slide accident, which was when she met Dr. Perry Savage. Later, when she went to college, she recalled her experience with Dr. Savage and decided that orthopedics was definitely the field for her. She started her education with a BA in history and a BS in biology from Birmingham-Southern College in 2003, following up with an MD from The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. She completed her residency in orthopaedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 2012, and her foot and ankle surgery fellowship through the University of Texas.

Dr. Gilmer's training as a medical professional came full circle when she worked as an MA in Dr. Savage's practice. Being involved in the athletic community helped Dr. Gilmer understand her patients, both active and continuing athletes. As she grew older, she learned how to modify and adapt to changing circumstances. A key example of that is her ongoing work to launch a YouTube channel to reach a wider audience. By tapping into the social media platform, Dr. Gilmer aims to make foot and ankle care more accessible. She hopes to educate people on effective self-care techniques that they can do at home, rather than spending money on unnecessary treatments.

Dr. Gilmer's most notable achievement is being the first female orthopedic surgeon in her practice and one of a very small percentage in Birmingham, Alabama. Although she faced adversity at multiple points in her career, she never stopped pushing forward until she achieved her goals. A collaborative professional at heart, Dr. Gilmer feels that one of her greatest privileges is being able to work with a patient to solve a problem.

To remain connected to other industry professionals, Dr. Gilmer is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Jefferson County Medical Society. In recognition of her excellence in medicine, she was named as a top doctor by the Annual B-Metro Magazine.

In her spare time, Dr. Gilmer enjoys bicycling, playing Frisbee, kayaking and hiking. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, William Lockridge, whom she married in 2008. Looking ahead she hopes to finish creating her YouTube channel and begin building her audience.
