Since 1996, Ms. Smith has served as a state representative for Georgia, advocating for State House District 70. As a state representative, she sits as the chair of the House Natural Resources and Environmental Committee, and her varied legislative career includes appointments on the House Working Group on Creative Arts and Entertainment; the Appropriations, Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Committee; and the Rules Committee. Ms. Smith also held the role of developer on the NR&E Committee Policy Academy in 2011 and was chair of the Energy and Environment Committee for the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC).
Ms. Smith's broad network is sustained through a variety of memberships across distinct associations, including her work as a board member for the Southern States Energy Board (SSEB) and as a member of the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL). She is also a former lay appointee of the State Bar of Georgia Investigative Panel and a former vice chair of the Environment Committee of the NCSL. Several key achievements define Ms. Smith's service to the state of Georgia, including her role as the author of bills like the Statewide Regional Water Districts and as a contributor to revisions of the Brownfield Act. She is also proud to have led the development of the Chattahoochee Bend State Park and to have helped secure state funding to spur the development of the Central Education Center and new construction for the West Georgia Technical College Campus in Coweta.

She has been a member of the Rotary Club of Newnan since 1992, and was the 1995 Chair of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. She also served as a board member of the Newnan-Coweta United Way, as well as the Newnan Hospital Board and has proudly accepted various awards in recognition of her service, including being cited among the 100 Most Influential Georgians in Georgia Trend Magazine from 2011 through 2016 and the Friends of Business Award from the Regional Business Coalition in 2011. In 2011, she also won the Legislative Livestock Showdown at the Georgia National Fair, and in 2010, Ms. Smith was named Legislator of the Year by the Georgia Chamber.
In accounting for her success, Ms. Smith credits her propensity for carefully listening to the concerns of her constituents and taking appropriate action. For this, and other such accomplishments, she was bestowed with the Legislative Award from the Association of County Commissioners in 2005 and 2006, and the Champion of Cities Award from the Georgia Municipal Association in 2006.
