After 25+ years working in corporate America, Ms. Shannon founded Connectus Worldwide, a minority, woman-owned certified professional business consulting firm that specializes in the delivery of services to Minority, Woman-owned, Veteran and LGBTQ Business Enterprises in 2018. The firm is an extension of her belief that when entrepreneurialism engages the entire community, the result is a dynamic and innovative environment abundant with opportunities and growth potential.
Prior to starting Connectus Worldwide, Ms. Shannon worked for Hallmark Cards Inc., a multi-billion-dollar corporation; in this capacity, she served as the supplier diversity manager from 2004 to 2013. Ms. Shannon held several other management positions during her tenure. Among her most cherished career achievements at Hallmark, Ms. Shannon was particularly proud to receive the Hallmark "Hall Legacy Award", for establishing diversity as a standard of business within Hallmark and the Kansas City, Missouri business community.
Ms. Shannon is affiliated with several important organizations relevant to her field. To wit, she is a member of the leadership council for the National Small Business Association, Washington, D.C., an inductee of the Black Achievers Society, serves on the board for the Prospect Business Association and a founding member of the SCORE Community Strategic Alliance in Kansas City. She previously served as a board member for the International Association of Women. Ms. Shannon was appointed by the Jackson County, Missouri Executive as a Commissioner to the Ethics, Human Relations, and Citizens Complaints Office. In addition, a member of the Professional Women of Color and a philanthropic member with the Sister's Circle of Greater KC. She also earned a bachelor's degree from Park College and a master's degree in management at Webster University.
In 2021, Ms. Shannon began consulting with more than 10 high profile corporations at the vanguard of a new regional effort to boost supplier diversity programs that promote equity in buying decisions and supporting local businesses through a CEO-to-CEO Challenge cohort that is powered by, Connectus Worldwide, KC Rising, and KC SourceLink in collaboration with the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. Mary created the Supplier Diversity Playbook, Guidelines for Creating a Sustainable Program. Looking toward the near future, her goal is to continue expanding the scope of her business by getting the message out about Connectus Worldwide as she continues to provide services to corporations and diverse businesses across the country, with a focus on creating a presence in the Midwest. Ms. Shannon attributes much of her success to being professional, genuine, and relatable. She also credits her faith, as it has sustained her across the span of the peaks and valleys of her career. In addition, her grandmother inspired her to go out and accomplish her dreams, instilling in her the belief that she could do anything she put her mind to.
