Just four months later, the business was forced to close its doors to dine-in customers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but much to Ms. Sommer's determination, she led the restaurant through those challenging times. Born and raised in Colombia, Ms. Sommer learned to cook at a young age under the guidance of her mother and grandmother. She immigrated to the United States with the goal of raising a family and making her family successful with an honest job. Once established in New Jersey, Ms. Sommer studied at Union County College, earning her associate degree in 2019. In addition to her formal schooling, she gained extensive knowledge through a local women's organization that provides networking and professional development opportunities for businesswomen.
As the restaurant's owner, Ms. Sommer oversees all aspects of the business, including ingredient shopping, making food displays, overseeing finances and managing waitstaff. However, she is thankful to have the help of her husband, children and brother-in-law, whom all contribute to the family business. Looking toward the future, Ms. Sommer hopes to expand to a larger location where she has more outdoor space to engage the local Cuban community through events such as car shows.
