After a fulfilling 35-year career in mathematics and education, Dr. Althoen earned the title of a professor emeritus at the University of Michigan-Flint in 2010. An accomplished educator, he was initially recruited as an assistant professor in 1975 before being promoted to associate professor in 1980 and a full professor in 1985. Additionally, Dr. Althoen served as the mathematics department chair from 1985 to 1989 and as a mathematics education consultant in the department of education between 2005 and 2007. During his tenure on campus, he also provided his expertise as a consultant to Mott Community College in Flint from 2001 to 2003.

During his professional career in Michigan, Dr. Althoen participated in the development of a teacher education program 2007, which was moved from the Mathematics Department to the Education Department where he helped create an enduring mathematics education curriculum for elementary education majors from 2007 to 2010.

During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Althoen served as a lecturer at Lehman College and Hunter College at the City University of New York between 1972 and 1973 and subsequently served as an assistant professor at Hofstra University from 1973 to 1975. Dr. Althoen also had the opportunity to serve as a visiting scholar at the University College of North Wales (now Bangor University) in 1979 and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor between 1981 and 1982.

As a respected scholar, Dr. Althoen has contributed to the writing of articles that appeared in various mathematical journals, including the American Mathematical Monthly, and has also presented his work numerous times. He has also co-authored several mathematical textbooks in the field, such as "Matrix Methods in Finite Mathematics" with R. Bumcrot in 1976 through W. W. Norton and "Statistics: Concepts and Applications" with H. Frank in 1994 through Cambridge University Press. Among other writing contributions, Dr. Althoen served as a co-editor, reviewer, and referee for over a dozen national and international peer-reviewed journals, including Zentralblatt für Mathematik, the American Mathematical Monthly, and the Journal of Algebra. Among his most noteworthy contributions as a writer, Dr. Althoen published "When Is R² a Division Algebra?" in 1983, which is still being referred to today by other experts in the field.

Civically, Dr. Althoen served on the Flint Historical Study Committee and as chairperson of Pierce Community Council. He was also an assistant soccer coach for several teams in the Flint area including the Flint Central High School Women's team.

Dr. Althoen studied at Kenyon College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts cum laude with honors in mathematics in 1969. Shortly thereafter, he achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics at the City University of New York Graduate Center in 1973. As a part of his subsequent commitments, he has been a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the American Mathematical Society. Dr. Althoen is also a member of the Mathematical Association of America, where he previously chaired the local arrangements committee for Michigan's section's annual meeting.

Recognizing his accomplishments, Dr. Althoen was honored by the University of Michigan-Flint as a Distinguished Professor in 2010 and previously with a Faculty Achievement Award for Scholarly/Creative Achievement in 1990. Other accolades include a Special Merit for Professional Development, a Special Merit for Service, and a Provost Special Merit. Moreover, Dr. Althoen received several grants throughout his career to support his work.
