With more than 45 years of experience in journalism, Mr. Block has found success as a leading newspaper publisher. In this capacity, he is the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Toledo Blade. Since 2001, he has focused his efforts on maintaining and elevating the journalistic standards and editorial accuracy of the newspaper. Additionally, he served as co-publisher for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 1989 until 2001 and was promoted to editor-in-chief in 1993, which he continues presently. During his tenure, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting for its coverage of the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue, resulting in the deaths of 11 people and the injuries of seven individuals.
Outside of his primary career efforts, Mr. Block serves as the vice chairman of the board of directors of his own company, Block Communications Inc. Since 1989, he has led the diversified media holding company headquartered in Toledo, Ohio. Under his leadership, he and his colleagues initiated the production of Pulitzer Prize-winning pieces such as the 2004 investigation, "Buried Secrets, Brutal Truths," regarding the Tiger Force unit of the U.S. Army that committed atrocities during the Vietnam War. Long dedicated to civic advocacy, he served as the chairman of the Historic Preservation Committee of Toledo and was a chairman of the Airport Committee of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority.
Prior to his current roles, Mr. Block began his career as a reporter with the Associated Press in 1977, starting in Miami and moving to New York City a year later. He joined the Toledo Blade in 1980 as a Washington correspondent, also serving as a European correspondent, Sunday editor, assistant managing editor and co-publishing editor throughout his career. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Block earned a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University in 1977. He subsequently attained an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the Medical College of Ohio in 2005. He intends to continue his work as a newspaper publisher, consistently working toward promoting journalistic excellence.
