Dene Ross Celebrated for Dedication to the Arts

Ms. Ross lends years of experience to her work in hand papermaking

In her art she captures the divine tapestry of landscape formed by the harmony of colors, shapes and textures.

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, NY, November 15, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dene Ross has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Driven by a passion for the arts and art history, Ms. Ross earned a Bachelor of Arts in art education and printmaking from Hunter College. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in art education and photography from the College of New Rochelle writing a thesis entitled "Photomontage Photography: As Explained and Discussed in the Work of Barbara Morgan." Spending more than a year with Barbara Morgan, as well as being a CNR graduate assistant in the printmaking and photography labs, inspired her love of experimentation and teaching.

Because both the mediums of printmaking and photography are paper-based and information was being published about the oxidation and disintegration of wood pulp papers used in books, Ms. Ross began to experiment in making paper. She gave her mother, a professor at Loyola University, New Orleans, framed pieces of her experiments. Her mother showed them to the president of the university, who requested that Ms. Ross show her work there. For this, her first exhibition, she built her first papermakers mould (20"X16") with her signature in wire that became a watermark when the handmade paper dried. Her first paper art made with wet 100% white cotton pulp and neutralized organic pulp were embedded works with fresh flowers or leaves and natural dyed yarns and threads for line and design.

As time went on, her work progressed to large (37"X47" and 22"X18") landscape Pulp Paintings created from old cotton blue jeans, white cotton rag and pure pigments. She makes the pulp herself in a Hollander beater and uses a retention agent for pigment saturation. "I am trying to do my part to reuse and make something new from what already exists on our planet."

From the spring of 2016 through the spring of 2019 Ms. Ross was a guest artist in several high school computer classes taught by Mr. Huggins in Yonkers, New York. As a result of this teaching collaboration, Ms. Ross created prints on 11"X8 1/2" white cotton rag paper she made using a printer with archival ink. These prints of her one-of-a-kind pulp paintings are a limited edition of 25, each signed and numbered.

Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Ross has presented exhibitions of pulp paintings/handmade paper art and taught papermaking by hand as a guest artist to elementary, middle and high school students. Ms. Ross has traveled to Rome, Italy and Athens, Greece to teach classes in recycled papermaking. Over the years, she has conducted staff development workshops for art teachers. She also developed the curriculum and taught a graduate level college course for art education and art therapist majors.

In her art she captures the divine tapestry of landscape formed by the harmony of colors, shapes and textures. Her goal is to instill joy and to challenge the viewer to observe the everyday world with a renewed respect for our planet. Looking toward the future, Ms. Ross aims to sell even more of her work, collaborate with curators, conduct additional presentations and experience the continued success of her career as a working artist.
