John Shulson Celebrates a Career in Writing and Journalism

    WILLIAMSBURG, VA, December 06, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John Shulson has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Mr. Shulson is an award-winning journalist and writer with close to 50 years of expertise writing on the subjects of military training and strategy, the arts and regional and community issues. He is a longtime columnist for the Virginia Gazette and a freelance correspondent for several Virginia Media publications, including the Virginian Pilot, Daily Press and Inside Business, and has written for national and international arts publications. As a correspondent, Mr. Shulson reports on community and regional happenings, including in-depth interviews and articles for Inside Business and previews and reviews of regional arts events.

In addition to writing for Virginia Media, Mr. Shulson spent more than 35 years as a motion picture-television writer-producer and writer for the United States Army, focusing on training strategies, emerging technologies and their potential application to the military training and strategy. While working for the Department of the Army, he consulted with knowledge-based experts and leaders from the military community, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Among the results of his work were a prototype of the Army's current distributed learning program and state-of-the-art learning facilities and advanced technological research and support for worldwide training and education for military personnel.

Mr. Shulson holds a bachelor's degree (cum laude) in psychology from Old Dominion University and transitioned into multi-media writing and production under the mentorship of a mentor who was a mainstay in the Golden Age of Radio. In accounting for his growth and success as a writer, he largely credits the support and honest critique and education he has received from peers in the field. Mr. Shulson pursued graduate-level coursework in psychology before pursuing a career in motion picture-television writing and technological developments.

Outside his work in journalism, Mr. Shulson is a member of the Community Advisory Board of WHRO, the Virginia area PBS/NPR affiliate and is active in The Voice, WHRO's reading service for the visually impaired. He has also contributed on-air reviews of arts events for WHRO-FM. He pursues personal, more localized writing projects including historical subjects and remains open to exploring other projects and opportunities as they arise. He has been affiliated with national associations for journalism, arts criticism and professional musicians.

Throughout his career, Mr. Shulson has been recognized with numerous awards for his work, including the top tier Department of Army awards, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award, for his research and white papers on strategic technological applications and distributed learning and worldwide training. He was also awarded an Addy Award for video writing by the American Advertising Federation and a Best in Virginia Merit for Feature Writing by the International Association of Business Communicators. Outside his vocational circles, he enjoys rowing, reading and collecting art and books. Concurrent with his writing endeavors, he was also a professional French horn player with regional symphonies and chamber music ensembles for 30 years.
