After graduating from high school, Zafer Roback qualified for the Army Intelligence School through the United States Army. Joining the military in 1959, he was assigned to South Korea, where he learned Judo, Jujitsu and weightlifting. As his interest in the field progressed, he soon relocated to Tokyo and Okinawa, Japan, until being assigned to Camp Kilmer in New Jersey. Departing from the military in 1962, he was granted several scholarships for Judo and attended the University of the Cumberlands, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical sciences in 1965. Shortly thereafter, he completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he also taught Judo and karate for 11 years.
