Drawing on over two decades of expertise in the nursing field, Ms. Nichols specializes in perioperative nursing. Since 2021, she has found much success as a perioperative director at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center. In this capacity, Ms. Nichols is responsible for managing five departments, recruiting, staffing and retaining personnel, team meetings, launching the interprofessional shared governance model and ensuring best practices in perioperative nursing, among other duties.
Ms. Nichols initially began her career as a staff nurse at Eastern Maine Medical Center where she worked from 1998-2000. She then fulfilled a life-long desire to serve her country and became a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force, where she was active from 2000 to 2004. After serving in the USAF, she rejoined the nursing team at Eastern Maine Medical Center where she worked as a charge nurse from 2004-2009. She began to expand her leadership capacity by garnering expertise as a nurse manager at Southern Maine Health Care from 2009 until 2011. Between 2011 and 2021, she built a prolific career as a director of nursing at Maine Medical Center. In her professional endeavors, Ms. Nichols has also contributed to such publications as the Outpatient Surgery Magazine and the OR Manager.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Nichols pursued an education at Husson University, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in nursing in 1998. She continued her academic efforts at Purdue University Global, earning a master's degree in executive nursing in 2019. As a commitment to her field, she has been certified as a nurse manager and leader by the American Organization for Nursing Leadership in 2013. Additionally, she has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, the American Nurses Association, the American Society of Peri Anesthesia Nurses and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Ms. Nichols contributes to the American Lung Association, the Maine Cancer Foundation, the United Way and is a member of her local chapter of AORN's Scholarship Committee.
Well regarded for her contributions to the field, Ms. Nichols has received multiple awards, including the Operating Room Excellence Award for Financial Management in 2022, the Honorable Mention for Process Improvement in 2018 and the Paul Cox Award for Quality in 2014. Among her professional accomplishments, she is most proud of her commitment and involvement in creating stability and reducing turnover rates in her units through the utilization of shared governance, decreasing surgical site infections, instituting and updating universal protocols and policies, initiating a standard process of post-operative phone calls to patients the day after the surgery and ensuring patient satisfaction based on comments from patient surveys. Reflecting on a long career, she attributes much of her success to her perseverance and passion for providing superlative patient care. Her teams describe her as an optimist who reminds them "no task is insurmountable with the right team" and to "always assume positive intent." Looking toward the future, Ms. Nichols hopes to successfully finalize all her current projects and aspires to expand the scope of her specialty in health care by pursuing a doctorate degree in nursing to further advance to the post of a chief nursing officer.
