NORTHBROOK, IL, December 15, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Robert "Bob" Verdi with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Verdi celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After a long and distinguished tenure in journalism that spanned more than 40 years, Mr. Verdi retired in 2009 from his sports writing career. The following year, after having a casual conversation with the president of the Chicago Blackhawks, a professional ice hockey team based in Chicago that he frequently covered while working in the field, about his interest in overhauling the organization, Mr. Verdi was presented with the opportunity to serve as their team historian.

Renowned for his expertise in both hockey and golf, Mr. Verdi spent three decades reporting as a columnist for the Chicago Tribune between 1967 and 1997. Subsequently retained by Golf Digest and Golf World in 1997, he spent the next 12 years reporting on various assignments. During those years, Mr. Verdi also remained affiliated with the Chicago Tribune as a contributing columnist and senior writer.

Survived by several great mentors throughout his career, including Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Anderson of the New York Times, Mr. Verdi was fortunate to meet many leaders of his time. He also tried to emulate their personas, how they conducted themselves in interviews, and the many strategies they used as journalists. Moreover, Mr. Verdi is grateful for the many wonderful experiences he had while pursuing his stories, including the Miracle on the Ice hockey game featuring the U.S. vs. the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

Mr. Verdi grew up in Port Washington, New York, and attended Paul D. Schreiber High School. Becoming interested in sports while coming of age, he recalls attending his first professional baseball game at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, which was home to the Brooklyn Dodgers at the time. After high school, Mr. Verdi studied at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, where he also garnered experience as a writer for the college newspaper, The Stentor, before achieving a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1967.

Mr. Verdi is a professional member of the Baseball Writers Association of America, the Football Writers Association of America, and the Golf Writers Association. He is also a member and past president of the Hockey Writers Association.

Highlighting his achievements, Mr. Verdi was named as the Illinois Sportswriter of the Year 19 times between 1975 and 1999. He was also selected to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Golfers' Association of America in 2004, was inducted into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame in 2005, was honored with the Nicklaus Memorial Tournament Journalism Award in 2012, and was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.
