Andrea J. Catania-Stephenson, MA, M.Ed, MLIS, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Ms. Catania-Stephenson is recognized for her dedicated career as a Teacher Librarian



She worked for several school districts over 35 years until her retirement in 2021.

    LINCOLN, CA, December 19, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Andrea J. Catania-Stephenson, MA, M.Ed, MLIS, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in Education, and Library and Information Science, Ms. Catania-Stephenson has earned distinction as a National Board-Certified Teacher and Librarian. In this capacity she worked for several school districts over 35 years until her retirement in 2021. During her tenure, she focused her efforts on making appropriate selections of books for the school library to enhance the curriculum and to integrate them into all curricular areas for the benefit of all students. To do this she collaborated with content area teachers to determine which materials would best fit into the enhancement of student achievement and learning, whether or not they were college bound. Teaching all students' the research process and how to conduct their research accurately and effectively, is among many of the information literacy concepts a teacher librarian teaches. A teacher librarian also curates and stays up-to-date regarding the most recent and relevant literature appropriate for every grade level. Among her professional accomplishments, she is proud to have received in 2016, the ALA Innovative Reading Grant. This National Grant from the American Library Association is a single award granted to one school library per year that supports the planning and implementation of unique and innovative ways for students to be encouraged and motivated to read, especially struggling and reluctant readers.

Ms. Catania-Stephenson began her career by earning as Associate of Arts Degree in law related occupations as a paralegal from Skyline College in 1984. She then transferred to San Francisco State University and graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies matriculating into their teaching program. While concluding her 1989 credential program, Ms. Catania-Stephenson completed necessary courses in Italy, graduating from The Universita' Italiana per Stranieri in Perugia, in order to enhance her Multi Subject Teaching, and Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development Credentials. Upon her return to the states, Ms. Catania-Stephenson began teaching and completed an M.Ed. in Educational Technology from San Diego State University in 1994, that included a credential in Computer Concepts and Applications. In 1996, she earned a Teacher Librarian and Library Services credential from California State University, Chico, and in 2005-2007, she earned an MA in Curriculum and Instruction and a Reading Specialist Credential from Sacramento State University. Well qualified in her field, she passed exams in 2013 to attain National Board-Certification as Teacher Librarian then, in 2014 she completed a Specialized Credential in Digital and Information Literacy from California State University, Long Beach. Lastly, in 2018, she completed her (MLIS) Masters in Library and Information Science degree specializing in Library Administration, from the University of North Texas.

Outside of her primary career efforts, Ms. Catania-Stephenson is a valued member of (ALA) the American Library Association and its chapter of (AASL) the American Association of School Librarians; (CSLA) the California School Library Association, serving as 2001 President of the Northern Region, on their Curriculum and Standards Integration Committee, and Governmental Relations committee; CUE, serving as the Capital Area affiliate President for 3 years, and as their regional conference chair for 2 years; (IASL) the International Association of School Libraries; (ISTE) the International Society of Technology Educators; and WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation team, as a chair for the last 2 years.

Looking to the future, Ms. Catania-Stephenson intends to continue working on WASC teams, continue working with her professional library organizations, and to advocate for school libraries by consulting and helping districts or County Offices of Education that wish to improve library services to the students of California. She will also continue to be a library advocate, emphasizing the importance of providing services to schools and the community, and creating ways to sustain the culture of libraries.
