Backed by 15 years of professional experience in the law, Ms. Capps presently works as the principal and founding attorney of The Capps Law Firm, where she primarily focuses on estate planning and trust administration. Knowing that she always wanted to have her own law firm, Ms. Capps wasted no time and did so prior to reaching the age of thirty. She attributes her success to her ambitious and determined mindset, and always being able to see past the negativity of others. Ms. Capps holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from DePaul University and a Juris Doctorate from California Western School of Law. Having previously litigated family law matters, she decided to put her business acumen and empathy for others to use outside of the litigation context. She has been praised by her peers, judges and clients for her integrity and being able to settle complex family law disputes in a private setting. Due to her impressive breadth of knowledge, Ms. Capps has authored such works as "New Federal Tax Implications on Maintenance Payors and Recipients" and "A Brief Discussion of Inherited IRAs and Non-Modifiable Maintenance."
In light of her outstanding body of work, Ms. Capps was selected for inclusion in the Chicago Lawyer Magazine "Women in Law," named a Top 40 under 40 in family and matrimonial law by the National Advocates two times, and appointed to the Illinois State Bar Association's Family Law Section Council six times in a row, until her recent resignation, where she and the other members were responsible for drafting and reviewing proposed legislation for inclusion in the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act.
Ms. Capps has also contributed to the community through the Puppy Mill Project, Wills for Heroes, and as a hearing officer for the Chicago Bar Association's Judicial Evaluation Committee. Ms. Capps feels that one of the most fulfilling aspects of being a business owner is offering job opportunities to young aspiring lawyers, and to those who may not have had any exposure to the law but for her faith in giving them a chance. She hopes that these individuals will "pay it forward" when they have reached the top of their career, like she has.
