BROOKINGS, SD, December 22, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Ryan Samuel has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Samuel is an assistant professor at South Dakota State University (SDSU), as well as an SDSU Extension swine specialist. He brings exceptional academic achievements to these positions, including a Master of Science in animal science and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Alberta, which he completed in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Previously, Dr. Samuel earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Prince Edward Island in 2003.
With a lengthy background of work on diverse farms in his native Canada, Dr. Samuel was on track to initiate directed study and research in the swine industry. His increasing interest and passion for the field prompted him to pursue graduate-level degrees. Subsequently, he moved permanently to the United States in 2011. Shortly thereafter, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow with Alltech from 2011 to 2012 before moving on to become a senior research scientist from 2012 to 2013. Ultimately, Dr. Samuel was named research project manager, a position he held between 2013 and 2016.
Dr. Samuel is an expert collaborator and seeks opportunities to participate in a team of scholars. To this end, he contributed to an article published in the Journal of Animal Science, titled "Evaluating Dietary Adjustment and Collection Times for Total Tract Digestibility of Ca, P, and the Essential Microminerals With Grower Swine" in 2016, 2 articles in 2020, 3 articles in 2021, and 5 articles in 2022 as well as numerous scientific abstacts. Specifically, in 2022, he contributed to the Journal of Animal Science publications "The Effect of Standardized Ileal Digestible Isoleucine:Lysine in Diets Containing 20% Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles on Finishing Pig Performance and Carcass Characteristics" and "Impact of Increasing Standardized Ileal Digestible Valine: Lysine in Diets Containing 30% Dried Distiller Grains with Solubles on Growing Pig Performance" as culmination papers from successful training of PhD student. Dr. Samuel's vision for the future includes more directed research on swine nutrition, and he looks forward to recruiting and mentoring graduate students who are new to the field.
