Col. O'Sullivan served in the United States Air Force for more than three decades, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1995 followed by an extensive 20-year career in K-12 education administration. Col. O'Sullivan served as a superintendent of school systems in Georgia and Minnesota after serving as an executive director in North Carolina and a deputy superintendent in New York State. He is a sought-after consultant with expertise in administration for many years.
The educational achievements of Col. O'Sullivan include a bachelor's degree in education from Indiana University, a master's degree in business administration from Western New England University and graduating from the National War College. Colonel O'Sullivan attributes much of his success to his upbringing. His mother was an educator and his father, a civil engineer, served in the Army including during World War II and also reached the rank of Colonel. He also participated in the Civil Air Patrol during high school and ROTC in college. He also credits his wife Maureen (deceased) for helping him achieve excellence in both his military and education careers.
During his career in the US Air Force, Col. O'Sullivan contributed to many advancements in command, control, communications and computer systems. He began his career in Strategic Air Command, flying on the airborne command post followed by a year in Vietnam. Later, Col. O'Sullivan held five leadership positions including that of the J6 in Pacific Command. He contributed to the scud missile detection system in the First Gulf War, later oversaw satellite systems during the time of the development of Global Positioning Systems and to early concepts related to cybersecurity. His interest in cybersecurity has led him to currently serve as a mentor for the Air Force Association CyberPatriot program.
Notably, Col. O'Sullivan's family is professionally-minded; His wife was a rehabilitation counselor, his oldest daughter is a nurse and his youngest daughter, a physician, is a Captain in the United States Navy. Presently, he is married to a professor emeritus of public health. Col. O'Sullivan was awarded a Bronze Star for Vietnam service and a United States Air Force Communications Electronics Professional Achievement Award.
