Joseph A. Custer has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry



    UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH, January 05, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joseph A. Custer has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on more than 30 years of legal experience, Mr. Custer is recognized for his expertise as a professor of law and director of the Judge Ben C. Green Law Library at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he researches, writes, teaches, and leads a staff of 13 people. He brings extensive knowledge of advanced legal research, electronic discovery, and technology in law practice to his role.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Custer matriculated to the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa. In 1983, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science, with high honors, from the University of Northern Iowa. He worked for the Cedar Rapids Gazette for two years and then went on to obtain a Juris Doctor from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1989 and became a member of the Missouri Bar. He practiced doing contract work and worked as a public defender while earning a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Missouri in 1991. In 1991, he accepted a position as attorney and director of information services at the Gage and Tucker Law Firm in Kansas City, Missouri.

After four and one-half years in private practice, Mr. Custer switched from private practice to academia, becoming the collection development/head reference librarian and lecturer in 1995 at the Kansas University School of Law. After three years, he obtained the position of associate director, collection development librarian, lecturer, and finally, associate director and head of technology services and lecturer. While there, Mr. Custer returned to the classroom, obtaining a Master of Business Administration. In 2010, Mr. Custer served as assistant professor of law and director of the Vincent C. Immel Law Library at the Saint Louis University School of Law. He joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University in 2015 as associate professor of law and director of the Ben C. Green Law Library. In 2023, he received promotion to full professor of law and he teaches three law classes and is currently a member of the Faculty Senate at Case Western Reserve University.

Mr. Custer has been active during his professional career, authoring, co-authoring, and editing four books. He has written and co-written several book chapters. He has authored over fifteen articles. The American Association of Law Libraries named one of his articles Paper of the Year in 2010. Most recently, he was nominated and appointed to the Executive Board of the American Association of Law Schools Section on Libraries and Legal Information Leadership.

He has taught several law school classes, including internationally. He taught International Legal Research at the University of Bahcesehir, Istanbul, Turkey, and Topics in Law: Introduction to Law and the Legal System at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, England. He has presented papers at Balliol College at the University of Oxford and the University of Hong Kong. He served as contributing editor of The Jury Expert, a publication of the American Society of Trial Consultants, and the Sex Offender Law Report by the Civil Research Institute. He currently writes a monthly column for the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Journal.

In January 2023 he was included in the Marquis Who's Who Top Professionals Series due to his industry experience, coupled with his professional dedication.

Mr. Custer is admitted to the Missouri and United States Supreme Court Bars. He has served on several American Bar Association Law School Accreditation teams. He is the youngest of four siblings, two still living, and has two children, Kaitlyn and Ben.
