Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on nearly five decades of experience in her chosen field, Ms. McNairy has earned distinction for her work as a teacher at the Palmdale School District, a school district that serves on behalf of students in Palmdale, California. Having held this role since 1988, she bears a particular specialty in language arts, and is responsible for teaching such subjects as mathematics, social studies and science for third-graders and many years for sixth-graders. Additionally, she has volunteered for different extracurricular activities, including with the cheerleading and dance team, and as an organizer for various holiday assemblies. Previously, Ms. McNairy served as a teacher at the Los Angeles Unified School District for over a year, and at the Chicago Public Schools for approximately 13 years.

Among her most cherished accomplishments as an educator, Ms. McNairy is most proud to have been recognized as the Teacher of the Year for the Palmdale School District on several occasions at the schools with which she has worked. Likewise, she was bestowed with a Living Legacy Award from the Jim Ledford Family Foundation in 2007, which honored her dedication to education and working with local youth. She was recognized as Palmdale School District Outstanding Certified Employee.

Outside of her work in education, Ms. McNairy has distinguished herself as a singer, songwriter and producer. Well-regarded for her contemporary gospel music, she has released six gospel CDs and two Christmas CDs. Throughout her career as a music artist, she has sung alongside such figures as Keith Pringle, Rickey Grundy, Albertina Walker, Walt Whitman and Rev. Calvin Bridges, and opened concerts for Vicki Winans, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Mercy Me, and Tasha Cobbs. For her accomplishments as a musician, Ms. McNairy was nominated in the early 2000s for a Bravo Music award.

Ms. McNairy first sought a formal education at Harris–Stowe State University, a historically Black public university, where she attained a bachelor's degree in 1974. Following this accomplishment, she went on to study at Governor State University, from which she earned a master's degree in 1977.
