Dr. Starzl is a renowned artificial intelligence machine learning specialist who presently teaches as an adjunct professor and conducts research at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. An expert in integrated artificial intelligence and complex system dynamics, he teaches students how to utilize mathematics and various tools in artificial intelligence to solve complex problems for companies. During his distinguished tenure at the university, Dr. Starzl notably served as the co-director of the artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship program (previously known as biotechnology, innovation, and computation) from 2015 to 2020 and as a machine learning systems scientist on campus between 2012 and 2015. Before teaching at Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Starzl held a teaching position at Touro College in New York City.

Apart from his faculty appointment, Dr. Starzl is a data consultant for Lutron Electronics in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, and an artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science expert for Boeing, whose corporate headquarters is in Arlington, Virginia. Throughout the course of his professional career, which spans more than 25 years, he has notably worked with several other recognizable organizations previously, including the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the US Air Force, the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM), MetLife and Samsung.

As an extension of his contributions to the field, Dr. Starzl has conducted extensive research, which has been disseminated in numerous professional publications, including Frontiers in Immunology and BiMed Research International.

Among Dr. Starzl's most notable accomplishments in the industry, he recalls his contributions to Boeing, which were instrumental in the organization's ability to become dominant in the commercial aircraft service and maintenance arena. Additionally, he notes his involvement with the U.S. Air Force through which he helped discover a new way of detecting when organ rejection was about to occur in a hand or face transplant. After this discovery, Dr. Starzl earned the opportunity to serve on the teams that completed the nation's first surgical bilateral hand transplant and some of the world's earliest surgical face transplants.

For more than a decade, Dr. Starzl has been volunteering his time as a mentor for SCS4ALL at Carnegie Mellon University where he focuses on teaching real-world computational and data science skills that encourage STEM careers in under-represented communities. Dr. Starzl has also been serving as a mentor for Leap@CMU on campus, which is geared specifically toward high school students.

Highly educated, Dr. Starzl received a Bachelor of Arts in politics and philosophy cum laude at the University of Pittsburgh in 2007 and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in machine learning and artificial intelligence at Carnegie Mellon University in 2012.

Affiliated with several industry-related organizations in support of his career, Dr. Starzl is presently a member of the Association of Computational Machinery, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Society for Biological Engineering.

Dr. Starzl was acknowledged with a Best of Conference in 2009 and the JK Hardest, MD, Award for Best Short Paper in 2012 by the European Plastic Surgery Research Council. Dr. Starzl also received an accolade for Leading Innovation in the Maternal, Child, and Newborn Healthcare Category from Reimagining Global Health in 2015.
