Drawing on 42 years of experience in the medical field, Dr. John Q. Cook is renowned for his expertise in aesthetic plastic surgery. Since 1988, he has been an attending plastic surgeon in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Rush University Medical Center and an assistant professor at Rush University. A leader in his field, Dr. Cook is best known for his extensive experience in facial aesthetic plastic surgery under local anesthesia, which provides a better patient experience, and for surgical innovations he has helped pioneer.
Dr. Cook is the founder and Medical Director of the Whole Beauty® Institute in Chicago's Gold Coast and in Winnetka on the North Shore. He established the Whole Beauty® Institute to provide a complete continuum and integration of plastic surgery and aesthetic treatments; this innovation has helped cement his reputation as a leader in aesthetic plastic surgery. A prolific writer, Dr. Cook has written about structural techniques in breast surgery in a publication of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and is currently writing a book on plastic surgery that focuses on how it can improve the quality of a person's life and health.
Although he originally aspired to become a novelist, Dr. Cook's entry into the world of medicine was inspired by family members and friends who were great surgeons. Most notably, he spent time with a brilliant heart surgeon and neurosurgeon who was the first to successfully separate Siamese twins conjoined at the head. During his training as a medical student, Dr. Cook was invited by the chair of the university's plastic surgery department into the operating room, and the experience inspired him to focus on the field.
Dr. Cook was educated at Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in literature. He then earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, and a master's degree in surgical research from the University of Illinois Chicago. He completed a residency in general surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center (now Rush University Medical Center) and returned to Northwestern University for a plastic surgery residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
In recognition of his success, Dr. Cook has received several awards and accolades throughout his career. He was named U.S. News Top Doctor, a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 10 consecutive years, a Best Doctor in America and a Real Self Top Doctor, and he was included in the Consumers Research Council of America's Guide to Top Surgeons. In addition, he was the recipient of the Surgical Sciences Award and the General Surgery Department Award from Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, and departmental honors in English literature from Yale University. Dr. Cook is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the Illinois Society of Plastic Surgery.
