She was subsequently recruited to Astellas Pharma US in Northbrook, Illinois, as the senior director of medical affairs where she oversaw its antifungal franchise. Additionally, Dr. Mbanefo-Azie had the opportunity to work for The Medicines Company, a biopharmaceutical company in Parsippany, New Jersey, as the organization's senior vice president of medical affairs managing its infectious disease franchise.
Among her most significant contributions to drug development, Dr. Mbanefo-Azie has introduced Brexafemme, the first in a new class of antifungal drugs to be developed in more than 25 years and the first new therapy to become FDA-approved in over 20 years for the treatment of vaginal yeast infection. Among her future goals, Dr. Mbanefo-Azie is concentrating on building out her plantation of ukwa, which is a type of African breadfruit, and medicinal trees with the aspirations of establishing a revolutionary nutraceutical company.
Eager about the future of her career, Dr. Mbanefo-Azie is fueled by her passion for infectious disease, clinical pharmacology, and feminism because she is capable of creating products that make women's lives easier. Gravitating toward medicine because she was fascinated for science, she has also found great satisfaction in caring for patients. Dr. Mbanefo-Azie credits several great mentors, physicians, and educators for inspiring her, including Dr. Virginia Cain who steered her in the direction of infectious disease, as well as her spiritual advisor, her father, and her belief in God.
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Mbanefo-Azie received a Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Science at the University of Nigeria, followed by a Master of Business Administration at the University of Notre Dame and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Nigeria. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include a residency in internal medicine and a dual subspecialty training in clinical pharmacology and infectious diseases at the Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Mbanefo-Azie received board certification in clinical pharmacology, infectious disease, and internal medicine. She has over 50 papers published in peer reviewed literature. Adding to her professional expertise, she is an elected fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
