Marquis Who's Who Selects Howard Cohen for Success in Journalism

Mr. Cohen was a member of the Miami Herald newsroom team that won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage of the Surfside building collapse.

Drawing on more than 30 years of expertise in his field, Mr. Cohen is an accomplished journalist who has been affiliated with the Miami Herald Media Company in Miami, Florida, since 1991. Garnering recognition in many different areas of the industry during his distinguished tenure, from writing features and obituaries for South Florida personalities to popular culture reviews. Mr. Cohen has also been active in the field as a breaking news reporter since 2017.

Throughout the course of his professional career, Mr. Cohen has also gained television and radio experience. Additionally, he has shot and edited videos for the newspaper's online site and was credited with founding the Sweat Equity fitness column where he reviewed exercise classes and covered the medical community and other health/fitness stories. Among Mr. Cohen's most memorable opportunities, however, was in 2016 when he scored a one-on-one, 15-minute interview with Barbra Streisand, which resulted in three stories.

Having learned the importance of never turning down an assignment, regardless of how challenging the story might be to cover, has been key to Mr. Cohen's success. Noting the importance of always listening to what people are saying and asking the right questions, he has never been afraid of putting in the time to conduct the necessary research to successfully tie it all together. Furthermore, Mr. Cohen has never shied away from learning from some of the best professionals in the industry.

Looking toward the future of his career, Mr. Cohen aims to become more involved in theater. He has appeared in several musical productions, including "Ruthless! The Musical" at the Actors' Playhouse at The Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables, Florida. Mr. Cohen was also a judge in the Actors' Playhouse/The Children's Trust's Annual Young Talent Big Dreams talent competition.

In January 2023, Mr. Cohen was hired as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Management at the University of Miami School of Communication.

Actively involved with various nonprofit and charitable organizations and events, Mr. Cohen traditionally writes stories for the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald's annual Wish Book, a holiday fundraising drive supported by Miami Herald Charities that assists South Florida residents in need. For years, Mr. Cohen has judged the Music category for the Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards, a program that, for more than 60 years, honors Miami-Dade and Broward's best and brightest high school seniors. He is a presenter at the live Silver Knights ceremony and writes the scripts for its television broadcast. He also donates to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mr. Cohen studied at Miami Dade College where he earned an Associate of Arts in management information systems. He subsequently received a bachelor's degree in the same field at Florida International University.

As part of his commitments to the industry, Mr. Cohen is a professional member of One Herald Guild. In light of his accomplishments, he was named Best Printer Writer with a Media Excellence Award from Christopher Columbus High School in 2017. Mr. Cohen was also the winner of an Obituary Writing Award from the Society of Professional Journalists in 2022.
