Robert Eugene Zipf, Jr., MD Recognized for Work in Pathology

Dr. Zipf experienced a fascinating career in health care within the laboratory and the classroom.

    ROCKY MOUNT, NC, February 03, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Robert Eugene Zipf, Jr. has been included in Marquis Who's Who. From watching his father excel as a pathologist, Dr. Robert Eugene Zipf, Jr. desired to do his part to help people, just as his father had. Backed by four decades of professional expertise, he is now a highly regarded clinical and forensic pathologist known for not just his skill, but also for his honesty and caring nature.

Now retired, Dr. Zipf experienced a fascinating career in health care within the laboratory and the classroom. Before his retirement, he served Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, North Carolina as the director of clinical and diagnostic laboratories from 1978 to 2006, simultaneously being a regional forensic pathologist throughout the state. Additionally, between 1978 and 2005, Dr. Zipf held the title of president of R.E. Zipf Pathology Associates in Rocky Mount, a consulting company that specialized in providing services in the areas of medical forensics, laboratory management and laboratory software for a multitude of public and private corporations.

Alongside his primary positions, Dr. Zipf has offered his expertise to the classroom, having taught as an assistant professor of pathology at Duke University and as a clinical assistant professor at the East Carolina University School of Medicine from 1979 to 1989. He has also served within the school of medical technology at Atlantic Christian College, now known as Barton College, as an adjunct professor and school director between 1980 and 1989.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Zipf garnered experience as the director of forensic pathology at Duke University Health System in 1967, where he also served as an assistant professor from 1973 to 1974. He was subsequently recruited as the director of radioisotope pathology at Riverside Methodist Hospital, OhioHealth, in Columbus, Ohio, and as a forensic pathologist and later deputy coroner for Franklin County, Ohio in 1974. Additionally, Dr. Zipf founded Clintrac Pathology Software and Clintrac Pathology Computers and was recognized as the vice president of Computerized Office Systems from 1986 to 2000.

Throughout his career, Dr. Zipf has been noted for his extensive work as a medical laboratory director and legal medicine consultant. Some of his most notable career achievements include converting a county coroner's system to a medical examiner's system, establishing a medical examiner system overseen by pathology residents and investigating deaths associated with radiation overdose. He has also assisted in designing and installing the earliest laboratory information systems and provided scholarships for higher education.

To prepare for his honorable career, Dr. Zipf earned a Bachelor of Arts at DePauw University in 1962, followed by a Doctor of Medicine at The Ohio State University in 1966. His subsequent medical training included an internship at Miami Valley Hospital and a residency in pathology at Duke University Medical Center. Likewise, Dr. Zipf is a retired major of the U.S Air Force. Enlisting in 1967, he served to chief anatomic pathologist and spent two years as a consultant to the surgeon general until his discharge in 1974.

Honored for an excellent career, Dr. Zipf was recognized in 2021 by North Carolina Wesleyan College with an Honor for Service. In addition, the college named its learning center, The Zipf Learning Center, after his family in 2021. He also received the President's Cup for Services by Nash Community College in 2019. He notes his additional career achievements include providing medical, legal and medical information services for attorneys, law enforcement agencies, hospitals and healthcare information corporations.

Now settled into retirement, Dr. Zipf remains involved in health care and higher education. He has been a longtime mentor of the Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools, as well as an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America. He currently sits on the board of trustees for Nash Community College and North Carolina Wesleyan College, and has been a member of the forensic advisory board for the North Carolina Department of Justice, a member of the Mayor's Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse and a member the Nash Chamber of Commerce. Among other roles, Dr. Zipf has served as an advisor for the Zipf Charitable Trust and Fund since 1999.

In an effort to remain aware of recent developments in the scientific community, Dr. Zipf maintains membership with the American Academy of Forensic Scientists, the North Carolina Medical Society, the Association of Clinical Scientists, the American College of Nuclear Medicine and the New York Academy of Sciences. He also is involved with the Nash County Medical Society, of which he served as president in 1995, and is a fellow of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
