James A. Hamilton, PhD Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Research

Dr. James Hamilton lends years of expertise to his work at Boston University

Dr. Hamilton conducts both basic and translational research on cardiovascular disease and diabetes, which are now linked to COVID as comorbidities.

NEWTON CENTER, MA, February 09, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James A. Hamilton, PhD has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Backed by years of educational expertise, Dr. Hamilton presently excels as a professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston University College of Engineering. He teaches undergraduate and graduate students in the classroom and in the laboratory. Dr. Hamilton conducts both basic and translational research on cardiovascular disease and diabetes, which are now linked to COVID as comorbidities. He is currently studying mechanisms by which these inflammatory diseases produce systemic inflammation and testing new diagnostics and therapies for multi-organ diseases. Previously, he worked as an assistant professor of continuing education at Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Hamilton pioneered application of carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy at Indiana University to plasma lipoproteins that transport cholesterol in the blood, reported in three publications in Science. He continued this research with novel MR imaging to identify and determine the localization of cholesterol in atherosclerotic plaques, which can progress (often without symptoms) to cause myocardial infarction and stroke. Dr. Hamilton also co-founded an MRI company which now uses CTA (computed tomography angiography) and artificial intelligence to enable quick, accurate diagnoses and treatment of cardiovascular disease (Elucid Bioimaging).

With his outstanding breadth of knowledge, Dr. Hamilton challenged the widely accepted model of protein transporters as gate-keepers in fatty acids in the plasma membrane with new methods that revealed molecular diffusion across the lipid bilayer. This research which is important for nutrition, for obesity, neurology, and diabetes, continues to provoke controversy and valuable discussions, such as "Commentary on fatty acid wars: The diffusionists versus the translocationists" after the publication of "CD36 enhances fatty acid uptake by increasing the rate of intracellular esterification but not transport across the plasma membrane." An expert in his biomedical research, Dr. Hamilton holds a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Juniata College and a PhD in chemistry from Indiana University Bloomington.

In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Hamilton has been invited as an honorary speaker at universities and international meetings, including Yale University Clinical Cardiovascular Medicine Grand Rounds, University of Nebraska (Omaha) Distinguished Visiting Professor for Combined Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, and General Surgery Grand Rounds, and as Distinguished Speaker of Chemical Engineering Award from Northeastern University. He was elected as a Fellow of the Massachusetts Academy of Sciences, received the Avanti Lipid Award from the Biophysical Society, and a Distinguished Alumni award from his undergraduate school Juniata College. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes pride in his new research on inflammatory diseases and new natural therapeutics for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Although persistence in breaking new ground has brought him far, he also credits his success to common sense, intuition, and the good fortune of having a young inquisitive outstanding research team and collaborations with kind and supportive leaders in biomedical research, including Nobel laureates, Chairs of Medicine, and Deans of Medical Schools. Within the coming years, Dr. Hamilton aims to focus on training young scientists to become caring and empathetic physicians and researchers in medical diseases with high mortality world-wide. He also seeks to expand his network of collaborators to build multi-disciplinary teams, which is becoming indispensable with the urgency of unmet medical needs and providing medical care to all who need it.
