To prepare for her professional journey, she earned an associate degree in computer information systems from Quinsigamond Community College and a bachelor's degree in computer science from Worcester State University. Following this accomplishment, she attained a Master of Arts in counseling psychology at Anna Maria College in 2007 and a certificate of advanced graduate studies in counseling psychology via Assumption College in 2009. Well qualified in her field, Ms. Mecum holds additional certifications in counseling children and adolescents and has been licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Allied Mental Health & Human Services Professionals as a mental health clinician.
Prior to establishing her own eponymous practice in 2010, Ms. Mecum built a prolific career through her work with several mental health clinics. Leveraging her experience, background and passion in serving on behalf of her community, she subsequently founded the New Beginnings Wellness Center Inc. (NBWC) in 2014, which has grown steadily from an initial roster of 12 employees to over 50. Focusing its efforts primarily on helping individuals build a brighter future and learn that every ending offers a new beginning. NBWC's area of expertise resides in treating high risk kiddos with complex trauma, as well as assisting families who are struggling with mental illness and addiction.
In addition to her primary career endeavors, Ms. Mecum has served as a court-appointed special advocate and as a volunteer for several homeless shelters. She operates her clinic based on the philosophy that one's past need not define their future, and leverages this principle whole-heartedly in her efforts to help patients recover from mental health challenges. As a testament to Ms. Mecum's expertise, NBWC was voted as the Best Behavioral Clinic by the Worcester Award Program in 2018.
Bearing an immense passion for her work, Ms. Mecum was initially inspired to enter her chosen field due to various challenges she faced throughout her life. Drawing inspiration from the lessons of experience, she credits much of her success to her sense of determination and perseverance, as well as to her children and grandchildren, for whom she has worked tirelessly to serve as a model of civic virtue. Looking toward the future, Ms. Mecum expanded her services via New Beginnings Group Practice LLC, which will cater to patients in both the private and public sector. Additionally, she aspires to establish Heart2Heart, a free drop-in center for adolescents who lack adequate access to services and support in their local communities.
