In this capacity, he works as a solo law practitioner with two paralegals and a private investigator. Additionally, Mr. Merlino is responsible for handling all major felonies and misdemeanors, including homicides, sex crimes, human trafficking, economic and white-collar crimes, drug trafficking, extraditions, domestic violence and more.
Mr. Merlino initially began his career at the Broward State Attorney's Office, where he worked first as a supervisor in the County Court Division, and later as a felony trial unit prosecutor from 1993 to 1997. Following this post, he handled a variety of federal appeals as a partner at Lieberman, Gutierrez and Merlino PA in Miami, Florida from 1997 until 2006. Between 2006 and 2013, Mr. Merlino garnered expertise as a partner and a lead trial attorney at Voluck and Merlino PL, a firm focused on criminal trial and appellate work in state and federal courts.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Merlino pursued an education at Florida International University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English literature, with a minor in marketing in 1990. He continued his academic efforts at the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law, earning a Doctor of Law in 1993. As a commitment to his field, Mr. Merlino has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Inc., the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Broward County Bar Association, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and the Police Benevolent Association, among others.
Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Merlino provides pro bono services for up to 15 cases per year and has been appointed by a joint committee of federal judges, federal public defenders and private attorneys to serve on the Federal Criminal Justice Act Panel for the Middle and Southern District of Florida. Among his vocational accomplishments, he is most proud of attaining justice for his clients with the acquittals and the nonguilty verdicts that he has obtained after trials.
Reflecting on a long career, Mr. Merlino attributes much of his success to his passion for public speaking, as well as his dedication, diligence and superb investigation, negotiation and communication skills, which allowed him to excel as a lawyer and accomplish a stellar reputation in his industry.
