Charles H. Brower II Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Law

Charles Brower channels years of expertise into his work in academia and private practice



Mr. Brower takes the most pride in representing Costa Rica before the International Court of Justice in 1998 and 1999 and being listed in Who's Who Legal for Arbitration.

    DETROIT, MI, February 20, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Charles H. Brower II has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Brower has been a full-time law professor for the past twenty-five years. For the past decade, he has served as Professor of Law at Wayne State University. Before that, he was Croft Professor of International Law at the University of Mississippi. Among other courses, he teaches contracts, the law of armed conflict, public international law, and international commercial arbitration. In addition, he is of counsel to Miller Canfield, one of Michigan's oldest firms. He also serves as arbitrator and as an expert witness on U.S. law relating to international litigation and arbitration.

Brower is active in several professional organizations, including as Vice Chair of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration and as an elected member of the American Law Institute. He also reports on NAFTA developments for KluwerArbitration.com and has published more than three dozen book chapters and law review articles. In the past, he served as an advocate for the Government of Costa Rica in proceedings before the International Court of Justice.

An expert in his field, Mr. Brower received a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude in political science and Russian language from the University of Vermont. He also earned a JD from the University of Virginia, where he served as an editor of the Virginia Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Brower has received the Donald H. Gordon Award for Excellence in Teaching from Wayne State University Law School, as well as the prestigious Smit-Lowenfeld Prize for the best article published on the topic of international arbitration.

While his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Brower takes the most pride in representing Costa Rica before the International Court of Justice in 1998 and 1999 and being listed in Who's Who Legal for Arbitration. Although the cornerstone of his success lay in his diligence and a desire to help others, Brower observes that his grandfather once said, "Nobody succeeds unless a lot of people want them to." In the coming years, Mr. Brower intends to continue serving on the leadership of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration, develop his practice as an expert witness, and publish more work on international disputes.
