Mr. Haugo retired from his long and successful career in landscape design after four decades in the industry. Pivoting into the nonprofit sector in 2017, he began serving as a volunteer military outreach director for the Minnesota Employee Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Apart from managing more than 150 units for seven reserve services within the state, Mr. Haugo, an expert on the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), has been instrumental in educating soldiers annually regarding their rights and guaranteeing that they are not violated while being deployed.
Having volunteered for the role for the ESGR shortly before concluding a more than 18-year tenure as a U.S. Army Reserve Ambassador, Mr. Haugo has led efforts that have resulted in 98% of its unit receiving a USERRA briefing from just 18% when he initially accepted his position. Apart from his work as an ambassador, he notably served in the U.S. Army for 30 years. Rising through the ranks to Colonel, Mr. Haugo was selected as chief of staff of the 88th U.S. Army Reserve Regional Readiness Command in Minnesota before retiring in 2000.
Shortly after Mr. Haugo started serving in the reserves, he began his career in landscaping. Working for two different companies during his tenure, he retired from Bachman's Landscaping in 2016 after more than 30 years in his position. In addition to his fieldwork, Mr. Haugo contributed a multitude of articles in his area of expertise. He also published monthly newsletters on behalf of various programs that support soldiers, families, and caregivers.
Mr. Haugo has been invested in an array of civic, nonprofit, and charitable interests, namely as a board member for the Armed Forces Service Center, a nonprofit service facility headquartered in Saint Paul, Minnesota, between 2000 to 2020. Other involvement included donating to the Wounded Warrior Project via the Minneapolis Veteran's Administration Health Care System Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center from 2001 and 2022 and, among other volunteer roles, serving as the committee chair of landscape certification for the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA) committee for more than 10 years. Mr. Haugo is presently active as a parishioner of the Saint Andrew Lutheran Church, as a veteran associate and member of the National Museum of the United States Army, and as a member of the Congressman Dean Phillips (MN-03) Veterans Council.
A graduate of Litchfield High School in Minnesota, Mr. Haugo received his diploma in 1965. He was subsequently accepted to the University of Iowa where he garnered a football scholarship and played collegiate football and track and field before earning a Bachelor of Arts in education in 1970.
Mr. Haugo is a life member of the Military Officers Association of America and the University of Iowa Alumni Association. He is also a member of the General John W. Vessey Jr. chapter of the Association of the United States Army and the Blue Devil Association.
The recipient of many accolades and medals throughout his career, Mr. Haugo garnered 11 awards for his career in landscaping from the MNLA, as well as a Committee Member of the Year Award from the association for his involvement in rewriting the landscaping certification manual in 2008. He was also decorated with a Legion of Merit with an Oak Leaf Cluster, a Meritorious Service with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, and, among others, an Army Commendation Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters. Furthermore, Mr. Haugo was recognized as an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America in 1963.
