Dr. Robert Lloyd Doyle has taken home three Excellence Awards from Massachusetts General Hospital



A prolific writer and researcher, Dr. Doyle has contributed many peer-reviewed articles on various medical and psychiatric topics.

A renowned child and adolescent psychiatrist, Robert Lloyd Doyle, MA, DDS, MD has devoted a notable 25 years to serving his patients at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He specializes in treating those with autism, pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), and comorbid psychiatric conditions associated with tuberous sclerosis. Notably, he has taken home three Excellence Awards from Massachusetts General Hospital.

During his career at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Doyle served as the clinical director of PDD research in the pediatric psychopharmacology unit, where he garnered extensive experience in treating those suffering from autism, attention deficient hyper disorder (ADHD), mood disorders, anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder. Additionally, he was active in numerous obsessive-compulsive disorder clinical trials. In the earlier years of his professional endeavors, Dr. Doyle practiced general dentistry and was a faculty staff member at Harvard University Health Services before changing the trajectory of his career to inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry.

To prepare for his career in medicine, Dr. Doyle matriculated at Louisiana State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in microbiology in 1979, along with a Bachelor of Science in zoology and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, both in 1985. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the institution's School of Dentistry in 1985, followed by a Master of Arts in humanities in 1990. He later attained a Doctor of Medicine in 1993 from Louisiana State University Health Shreveport.

Additional educational pursuits to Dr. Doyle's credit include a residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Dartmouth Medical School/Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center between 1993 and 1998. He also completed a fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in 1999. To remain abreast of his field, Dr. Doyle was on the editorial board of the International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology, which is noted among the top 10 scientific journals in Italy. He has also served on the editorial boards of several other peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals. Additionally, he was appointed as deputy editor of the European Journal of Neurodegenerative Disorders.

A prolific writer and researcher, Dr. Doyle has contributed many peer-reviewed articles on various medical and psychiatric topics and he is the co-author of "Almost Alcoholic: Is My (or My Loved One's) Drinking a Problem?" He also published an article about the effects stress had on Italian health care workers during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was recognized with the Premio Italian Medicina Award, considered one of the highest accolades in the country, as well as his most notable achievement. In addition, Dr. Doyle frequently lectures at conferences and in public venues on topics ranging from autism to fibromyalgia to substance use disorders. He remains passionate about sharing this much-needed information in a way that is both easy to understand and enjoyable for his audiences.

Upon reflection on his exceptional career, Dr. Doyle attributes his success to his perseverance and extensive education, citing all his degrees have proven helpful in his career. Likewise, he credits the influence of his mentors, Dr. George Murray and Dr. Edwin Cassem. Looking toward the future, he plans to become certified in age management medicine and publish a book on the topic, with a focus on inflammation and the ways to manage it through a regimen of optimized nutrition, exercise and sleep.
