As an expert in nuclear engineering with established laboratory and reactor operation experience, he has served an instrumental role in the firm's success. Supplementing his full-time role at J Foster & Associates, Dr. Bess has been serving as a consultant for the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) since 2021.
Recognized as a certified 8(a) and DBE business, JFA notably specializes in engineering, environmental, and construction services to both governmental and commercial clients.
Prior to assuming his current position, Dr. Bess was a distinguished researcher at the Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls from 2008 to 2021. He also served as a research scientist at the Center for Space Nuclear Research between 2007 and 2008. Additionally, Dr. Bess accumulated experience as an undergraduate laboratory technician and graduate research assistant at the University of Utah between the years 2000 and 2007.
Highly accomplished in his respected field, Dr. Bess' most notable achievement included a leadership role as the chair of two international benchmark projects for the NEA.
Committed to his faith, Dr. Bess is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through his church, he has also been involved as a former missionary, having served in the Barcelona Venezuela Mission between 1997 and 1999.
Dr. Bess pursued a formal education at the University of Utah through which he received a Bachelor of Science in chemical and fuels engineering in 2003, a Master of Science in nuclear engineering in 2005, and a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear engineering in 2008. While working toward his degrees, Dr. Bess performed in the university's marching and pep bands, as the chair of the nuclear engineering graduate student advisory committee, and as a graduate student representative for the engineering college council.
To further ensure his place at the forefront of his profession, Dr. Bess has maintained affiliation with numerous prominent organizations. Among them, he is active with the American Nuclear Society (ANS), including work on ANSI/ANS standards. He is also a past president of the University of Utah student branch of the ANS. Furthermore, Dr. Bess remains a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi.
In light of his achievements, Dr. Bess was the recipient of an Alpha Nu Sigma Award from the ANS. He credits having good mentors throughout his career to his industry success.
