For more than a decade, Dr. Painter has been a faculty member at Emory University in Atlanta, serving as the director of the Emory Institute for Drug Development (EIDD) and the Emory Institute for Drug Development and as the chief executive officer of Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory (DRIVE). He also teaches as a professor of pharmacology on campus.

As a seasoned scientist and leader of drug development, Dr. Painter became recognized as the director of chemistry and virology at Burroughs Wellcome Company beginning in 1983 and as the director of the research process and the international deputy therapeutic head of antiviral research at GlaxoSmithKline. Additionally, Dr. Painter established two biotechnology companies, Triangle Pharmaceuticals as the executive vice president of research and development and founding management team member and Connerix Inc. as the founder and chief executive officer.

Renowned for his contributions, Dr. Painter was responsible for discovering and developing the anti-human immunodeficiency virus drug, Emtricitabine (trade name Emtriva), during his tenure at GlaxoSmith Kline. The drug was designed to prevent and treat the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in adults and children. Emory University also recognized Dr. Painter by establishing an endowed distinguished professorship, the Endowed George R Painter III Distinguished Professor, in his honor. The professorship recognized his contributions to developing a critical lifesaving antiviral drug that has since been approved globally for treating COVID-19. Among other accomplishments, Dr. Painter co-invented and secured more than 150 U.S. patents, several of which have led to the approval of drugs or combinations of drugs that have become available to the public for the treatment of hepatitis B, smallpox, influenza, and other conditions. Dr. Painter has notably disseminated his findings by authoring more than 120 peer-reviewed articles.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Painter aims to pursue the next significant virus. He also plans to remain steadfast in establishing medicines and treatments to meet the needs of underserved populations. Moreover, Dr. Painter is considering launching another biotechnology company.

A graduate of Emory University, Dr. Painter received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, a Master of Science in physical organic chemistry, and a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry. He also served as a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology.

To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Painter is a professional member of the International Society for Anti-Viral Research, the American Society of Microbiology, and the American Chemical Society. In recognition of his distinguished tenure in drug development, Dr. Painter has been recognized with a feature article in Atlanta Magazine.
