An accomplished listee, Dr. Sanayei celebrates many years of experience in structural engineering and has been noted nationally and internationally for his research achievements, leadership qualities, and successes. Dr. Sanayei is recognized as an expert in engineering, having joined the faculty at Tufts University in 1986 as an assistant professor. Promoted to associate professor of structural engineering in 1992 and full professor in 2000, he teaches higher-level undergraduate and graduate courses in structural engineering.

As a faculty member at Tufts University, Dr. Sanayei notably excelled as the chair of the civil and environmental engineering department from 2007 to 2009. He also served on many committees and boards, such as the budget and university priorities committee as chairperson, the engineering computing committee, and Tufts student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Additionally, Dr. Sanayei has been a research advisor and mentor to many masters and doctoral students as they published significant peer-reviewed and highly referenced journal articles.

Dr. Sanayei received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the Sharif University in Tehran, Iran, in 1978, followed by a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in structural engineering at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1980 and 1986, respectively.

Having transitioned into higher education, Dr. Sanayei initially served as a teaching fellow at UCLA, his alma mater, between 1983 and 1986. He also served as a research engineer on campus from 1981 to 1983. In the field, Dr. Sanayei garnered success as a structural engineer at Garrett/AiResearch (now Honeywell) in Torrance, California, and performed aircraft component structural analysis for failure assessment and design improvements.

As an experienced engineer and researcher at Tufts University in bridge structural health monitoring, Dr. Sanayei has led numerous projects related to train-induced vibrations, nondestructive testing of full-scale structures, and the development of bridge signatures. He has extensively advanced the implementation of structural condition assessment, wireless instrumentation, nondestructive testing, and data acquisition. Furthermore, Dr. Sanayei has become an expert in building floor vibrations and structure-borne noise, the operation of sensitive equipment, and precision manufacturing while completing numerous tests and predictions for his research.

Dr. Sanayei notably authored/co-authored many scholarly articles, disseminating his research in prominent professional journals such as the Journal of Bridge Engineering, the Journal of Structural Engineering, the Engineering Structures, and the Journal of Vibration and Control. Dr. Sanayei additionally served as an associate editor for the Journal of Bridge Engineering.

Dr. Sanayei has been a member of several professional organizations during his professional career including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), the Boston Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Furthermore, he served as the chair of ASCE/SEI Technical Administrative Committee on Performance of Structures from 2008 to 2012 where he directed the activities of the following four committees: Methods of Monitoring Structural Performance, Structural Identification of Constructed Systems, Performance Based Design of Structures, and Disproportionate Collapse Standards and Guidance.

As a testament to his integrity and professional acumen, Dr. Sanayei was recognized as Professor of the Year by Tufts University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for the 2016-2017 academic year. Dr. Sanayei cites his passion and aptitude for mathematics and physics for his choice of pursuing a career in engineering and finds great privilege in educating the next generation of engineers.
