Colette A. Shumate-Smith Lauded for Excellence in the Arts

Ms. Shumate-Smith channels years of expertise into her work as a designer and artist

Today she is owner and CEO of Nine Acre Woods LLC, a retreat in Maine.

MONTVILLE, ME, March 16, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Colette Shumate-Smith has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Upon earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Washington, Ms. Shumate-Smith moved to Boston to complete her Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Boston University. She was a participant in NCECA, and a Muralist and Artist in Residence on the Massachusetts Cultural Council Roster starting in 1997. With many international juried awards from across the country including Miami, Alabama and California, she started working with local artists. A volunteer at the Leominster Art Center and Gallery she quickly moved to a Board of Directors position. Here she spearheaded First Friday City Events.

For ten years she was a middle school art specialist before she moved on to an interior design position at The Home Depot, and later JCPenny. With her color experience and with many works in private and corporate collections this was a good fit. Showing at the Worcester Art Museum, and Worcester Center for Crafts, she continued making art. She became part of many invitational presentations with her current Gallery Sitka, Arts Museum of Cape Cod, Artsy listing, and now with Storefronts.com. Making sales and continuing her quality work, pottery and clay again surfaced as did Alice in Wonderland themed art, her most popular theme yet. A collage and fantasy painter, she had found yet another series of work people want for their home.

Today she is owner and CEO of Nine Acre Woods LLC, a retreat in Maine, the original home of the Haystack Mountain School when it was founded in the 1950s. Professor Fred Wahl was the executive director of the Deer Isle facility for many years and her teacher at Boston University. He served on her graduate committee and was a mentor to her husband David L. Smith. Professor Wahl was instrumental in shaping attitudes for many artists. The Haystack Mountain School moved to Deer Isle in 1958. Colette is excited about hosting events on this magical mountain property in Mid-Coast Maine. Find the listing on hip camp.

Her societies of note are the NCECA, ICAN, SCBWI, and the Maine Makers Society where her latest mural is being completed.

Even though her career has been filled with highlights, like work for The Bob Hope Heart Center of Seattle, her life works usually combine art, science and history into one image. An environmental artist, she aims to keep the memory of a clean, beautiful planet via her pure color transparencies and memory scapes.

Abstract Emotionalism is what she calls it: "I feel we can change the future to suit our needs and co-exist if we all contribute and work together towards a common goal."
