ONTARIO, CA, March 16, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alexandra Marie Burrel, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on more than 16 years of success in the academic sector, Dr. Burrel is recognized for her expertise as associate vice president and chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at the University of La Verne, where she utilizes her vast expertise in student development, diversity, equity and inclusion literacy, recruitment, and institutional event planning and administration. Her responsibilities at the university include strategic planning and streamlining processes through an equity lens, providing development opportunities for the campus community, reviewing, assessing and recommending policies that promote inclusive and equitable climates, and leading efforts to embed a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the community. While the work can be challenging at times, Dr. Burrel finds it deeply rewarding to witness the growth and development of students, staff, and faculty members and to continue the work toward a more equitable and inclusive community for historically marginalized groups.

Adjacent to her main responsibilities in the field, Dr. Burrel is a skilled mental health therapist and consultant who offers services to a range of individuals. As the proprietor of Peaces of Cake, LLC — a name that refers to her nickname given at birth of "Cake" — and her consulting work through A M Burrel Consulting, she provides workshops, keynotes, trainings, leadership and group work, as well as individual guidance. In addition, Dr. Burrel works with private practices and consulting groups such as RSS Consulting, where she consults with colleges, universities and nonprofits to help them along their racial equity journeys. In 2022, she connected with A Path to Peace Counseling, LLC, where she offers mental health therapy to help individuals heal, develop their goals, and to assist them in realizing their purpose and direction in life. Dr. Burrel sits on the board of Caleb's Kids, a nonprofit organization that strives to empower youth toward enriched, hope-filled lives, and is involved in many other community efforts to support societal change and growth.

Dr. Burrel earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, with a minor in psychology and social work, from Western Michigan University. Upon her graduation, she continued her education at Western Michigan University to obtain a Master of Arts in Counselor Education in 2008, serving as an academic advisor during her studies. She later completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Higher Education Administration from Morgan State University. She is licensed as a professional counselor by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, is a national certified counselor by the National Board for Certified Counselors, has achieved Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification from Developing Leaders Inc., and Diversity and Inclusion Certification from Cornell.

Prior to joining the University of La Verne in 2019, Dr. Burrel held a series of increasingly senior academic appointments. These included academic specialist at Michigan State University, admissions officer and international student coordinator at Morgan State University, assistant dean for enrollment and student affairs at Howard University and co-instructor with a joint mentor and scholar appointment at Monmouth University. As an ongoing commitment to her profession, she is a member of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE), American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

Dr. Burrel attributes her success to God as well as the support of family, friends and community. Moving forward, she hopes to achieve a greater balance in her holistic well-being. As part of this journey, she enjoys spending time with God, family, and friends, appreciating amazing natural views of land and water, and resting in a healthy and calming environment with music. She also loves to travel and is on a quest to visit all 50 states; she has visited 45 already.
