Previously, Ms. Maccioni and her husband lived in Italy where she was a freelance lighting designer from 1996 to 2015, a lighting designer and category manager for Sonepar Italia Spa from 1996 to 2012, the owner of RaccaLuce from 2004 to 2012, and a lighting design teacher for IED (European Institute of Design) in 2015. Relocating to the U.S. shortly thereafter, they established their gelato business, which now has three locations in California. Ms. Maccioni aims to continue opening new stores throughout the state and become well-recognized as a premier leader in the gelato space.
In her spare time, Ms. Maccioni has been affiliated with an organization called Les Dames d'Escoffier International, which is comprised of women in the food and hospitality industry that work together to raise money via fundraising campaigns to benefit local community causes.
Highly educated, Ms. Maccioni earned a Bachelor of Science and a master 's degree in Electronics Engineering at the Università di Pisa in Pisa, Italy, in 1991 and a master's degree in lighting design at Sapienza Università di Roma in 2008. Well-qualified in her present role, Ms. Maccioni studied gelato making at the Università del Gelato of Carpigiani in Bologna, Italy, under the tutelage of a world-renowned gelato chef.
As a testament to her integrity, Ms. Maccioni's company was recognized as a Best Bites by the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2022. Bobboi Natural Gelato was also named among the Ten Best Under the Radar by USA Today in 2020, as the Best Ice Cream Shop in California by Travel + Leisure in 2019, and Second-Best Ice Cream Shop in America by Yahoo Food in 2016. Among other awards, it garnered recognition as One of the Best Dessert Shops in San Diego by Zagat in 2018 and was named One of San Diego's Sophisticated New Offerings by the Wall Street Journal in 2016.
She attributes her professional success to creativity, hard work, and putting people at the center. She enjoys focusing on purity and flavor, she has always wanted to make a gelato that is true to her heritage, yet reflects the bounty of California, her new home.
