Mr. Jones has enjoyed a prosperous career as a scholar, speaker and educator, accepting appointments across distinct contexts that include charter and religious schools as well as the higher education arena of colleges and universities. Currently, he is a tenured English instructor at Skyline College where he has taught in the Language Arts Division and English Department since 2011. Mr. Jones partners with students and colleagues to promote key learning tenets that advance comprehensive scholarly aptitudes as well as personal preparedness.
At an early age, Mr. Jones realized his deep interest in education and acknowledges the inspiring influence of the superb teachers with whom he interacted. He pursued higher education first at California State University, East Bay, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1995. In 2004, he traveled abroad to Barcelona, Spain to expand his professional options by earning the Certificate for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages from Oxford House College. Upon his return to California, Mr. Jones then secured a Master of Fine Arts in English and Creative Writing from Mills College in 2010.
Mr. Jones held concurrent teaching appointments while pursuing his advanced degrees. For example, he was an instructor at the College of Alameda in 2010 and taught for the Upward Bound Project at Holy Names University from 2000 to 2012. After San Francisco State University granted Mr. Jones the Certificate for Teaching Post-Secondary Reading in 2012, he joined Skyline College's faculty as a tenure track English instructor, and from 2010 to 2017, Mr. Jones excelled while on the faculty at Berkeley City College, and Laney College.
Awareness surrounding the issues of equity and social justice is foundational to Mr. Jones' curricular objectives and course content. In 2016, he engaged in a cooperative effort to secure funding for students active in the African American Success Through Excellence Program Learning Community by co-founding the ASTEP Scholarships. He previously held membership with the Northern California Council on Black Affairs and the Council of Independent Black Institutions.
Sharing his expertise through participation in academic conferences and symposia is vital to Mr. Jones' professional vision. Throughout his varied career, he has consistently delivered compelling talks founded on comprehensive research and his academic, corporate and cultural experiences. In 2018 he presented at the 11th Black, Brown College Bound Summit, and facilitated a workshop at the A2MEND 11th Annual Conference respectively focusing on teaching literature to Black and Brown communities; moreover, he was the co-facilitator of a sports and politics panel hosted by Skyline College in 2017. Mr. Jones is often invited to be the keynote speaker at prestigious events, like the College of Alameda Black History Month celebration in 2010 and a colloquium held at the Lick Wilmerding Academy in 2004. Additionally, he delivered the keynote address at the Hayward High School Kwanzaa celebration in 2002 as well as the Marin Academy Literacy Festival in 2001 and 2002.
With numerous publications to his credit, Mr. Jones is known as a prolific and influential author and editor who has written convincingly on an array of topics. Notably, his work has been showcased through a variety of media outlets. For example, in 2010, he was a featured columnist for theCulinaryScoop.com and a columnist in 2012 for JustThink.org. He co-edited "The Hip Hop Vegan: Plant-Based Secrets They Won't Tell You," which was published in 2020. In the same year, he published an article titled "Breaking the Silence: The Agony and Paradox of Education" for the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges which was widely disseminated throughout the State of California in 2020. Mr. Jones is a novelist and author of several books including "Black Man in Europe" first published in 2008 (revised in 2010) and "Excerpts From My Soul: Read Without Prejudice" published 2010.
A commitment to supporting other writers and writing initiatives is foundational to Mr. Jones' work; to this end, he organized the Natural Born Poets Contemporary Poetry Reading Series in 2011 and held a seat on the Berkeley City College Writing Portfolio Committee in 2011. While on faculty at Holy Names University, Mr. Jones took part in the teaching Writers Boot Camp, affiliated with the Upward Bound Project in 2011 and 2012 focusing on using Hip Hop to teaching writing strategies. Mr. Jones was a presenter at the American Anthropological Association 2012 Annual Meeting, where he presented a paper on Hip Hop Pedagogy. The following year in 2013, he was also a panelist at the 3rd Annual Hip Hop Summit at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
Mr. Jones has proudly promoted racial and cultural equity through his collaborative efforts with the 2020 Equity Academy-Equity Institute Conference, of which he was a co-facilitator. He was also a panelist during a Black History Month colloquium presented at Skyline College in 2020, and he is pleased to have accepted generous invitations to join various television and radio programs, including the "Civil Arts Radio show with Milton Bowens" in 2008 and "Transitions and Traditions with Greg Bridges," also in 2008. Mr. Jones also boldly took part in the provocative interviews that comprise "The N-Word," an American documentary film produced in 2008 as well as the Rock the School Bells Hip Hop Conference promotion videos produced between 2012 and 2016.
Impressive commendations such as the Meyer Award-Academic Senate Teacher of the Year recognition from Skyline College in 2016 have marked Mr. Jones' distinguished career milestones. He also won the Edward and May Chan Award for Outstanding Service to Community College Students in 2010, and the Upward Bound Summer Academic Program at Holy Names University credited Mr. Jones with the Outstanding Teacher Award in 2009. Mr. Jones attributes his professional and personal success to an abiding faith and unwavering family support.
Mr. Jones is gratified to track his students' achievements and appreciates that he played a productive role in the success they realize; notably, he counts that legacy as his most worthy career achievement thus far. Looking toward the future, he aims to persist in his scholarly and creative efforts as a writer and speaker and aims to travel broadly in an effort to accumulate critical cultural insights to further shape his expansive worldview. Ultimately, Mr. Jones seeks to retire at the rank of professor with full tenure.
