James Heagy, PhD Celebrated for Dedication to the Defense Industry

Dr. Heagy channels years of experience into his work with the Institute for Defense Analyses

Backed by years of expertise in physics and mathematics, data analysis, and more, Dr. Heagy presently serves as a research staff member in the Science and Technology Division.

ALEXANDRIA, VA, April 05, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James Heagy, PhD has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Backed by years of expertise in physics and mathematics, data analysis, and more, Dr. Heagy presently serves as a research staff member in the Science and Technology Division at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) in Alexandria VA. Since joining IDA in 1997, he has sustained analytic thrusts in several areas to include: modeling of missile defense systems and architectures, verification and validation of atmospheric transport and dispersion modeling systems, nuclear weapons effects, and, most recently, orbital debris analyses.

Prior to joining IDA, Dr. Heagy worked as a satellite maneuver analyst for Computer Sciences Corporation (now DEX Technology), under contract to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, where he supported several missions, including GOES-K, and the halo orbit missions ACE and WIND.

After receiving his BS in physics from Gannon University and PhD in Physics from Drexel University (1989), Dr. Heagy held post-doctoral research appointments at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Silver Spring, MD, and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C. As a post-doc his focus was almost exclusively in nonlinear dynamics and chaos research, where he made important contributions to the theories of "strange nonchaotic attractors" and "on-off intermittency" (NSWC) and "chaotic synchronization" (NRL).

Some of Dr. Heagy's more significant publications include (in chronological order): "A physical interpretation of the Hénon map", "Characterization of on-off intermittency", "Synchronous chaos in coupled oscillator systems", "The birth of strange nonchaotic attractors", "User-Oriented Two-Dimensional Measure of Effectiveness for the Evaluation of Transport and Dispersion Models" and "General Approach to Template-Based Target Recognition."

Dr. Heagy attributes his success to his (sometimes childlike) curiosity and overall perseverance. In the near future Dr. Heagy aims to write a textbook or a monograph on some of the analytic and mathematical techniques he has used throughout his career.
