Since 2018, he has focused his efforts on overseeing close protection operatives while conducting investigations and helping his clients. He specializes in insurance fraud cases, and private and family investigations, including child support and custody battles. Additionally, he has been a sub-contractor as a fraud investigator with New York State Insurance Fund since 2014. He served as a personal body guard for Regis Philbin.
Mr. Downey began his career as a police officer for the New York City Police Department in 2000 and retired as a Sergeant in 2012. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Downey attended Port Richmond High School where he was a two sport athlete in football and baseball. After high school he earned an associate's degree from Brookdale Community College and later attended Molloy University where he was a pitcher for the Molloy University baseball team.
Among his professional accomplishments, Mr. Downey received 28 police department medals for excellence in police service and was a five-time recipient of the Cop of the Month award. He was a Post Liberty Medal Nominee for saving two men during a fire incident in Staten Island, New York and appeared on a Discovery Channel program for a reenactment of the story of a man in Ohio who killed two of his intimate partners. He was also presented with a New York City Police Honor Legion Award for his heroic contributions during the 2003 Staten Island Ferry crash, an incident that was reenacted in Discovery Channel's six-episode series on marine disasters, "Disasters at Sea: Death on the Staten Island Ferry," where he also appeared as a commentator on what transpired.
Mr. Downey has been a travel team owner of SBC since 2014 and was named the head coach of the Jersey Shore Stallions for the 2023 ACBL summer collegiate league. He began his coaching career as a little league manager in 2009 where he won a NYC championship in 2014 and a NYS championship in 2015 as the Little League All-Star Manager. He then went on to coach at the high school level as an assistant coach for Saint Peter's, McKee/Staten Island Tech and Poly Prep Country Day School where he was the head junior varsity baseball coach. After his time coaching, John was an associate scout for the San Diego Padres from 2019 until 2021.
Mr. Downey is proud to have been featured in Sports Illustrated for running the New York City Marathon www.si.com in 2009. Additionally, he has received other baseball awards and travel team championships while coaching at SBC Baseball.
John is married to Christina and has two sons, John Jr. and Ryan. John plans to expand his business into one of the top security and investigative companies in the nation along with continuing his coaching career at the college level.
