Kevin L. Palmer, PhD, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Kevin L. Palmer serves as an expert in malaria vaccines, parasitic diseases and tropical medicine

    HONOLULU, HI, April 14, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kevin L. Palmer, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Drawing on over four decades of expertise in the field of medicinal research, Dr. Palmer specializes in malaria control, parasitic diseases and tropical medicine. Since 2012, he has found much success as an affiliate graduate faculty professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine. In this capacity, he is responsible for teaching classes, traveling, mentoring students enrolled in doctorate committees and supporting the Department of Tropical Medicine and Pharmacology. In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Palmer serves as the chief executive officer and senior consultant at Vectorborne Diseases Associates LLC as of 2009.

Dr. Palmer initially began his career working as an assistant researcher at the University of Hawaii at Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine from 1982 to 1985. Following this post, he contributed to the World Health Organization (WHO), where he served on the regional malaria team as a malaria scientist from 1985 until 1994, and as a senior malariologist between 1994 and 2000. During this time, Dr. Palmer also excelled as a country liaison officer for the World Health Organization and the United Nations Development Programme from 1997 to 1998.

Dr. Palmer continued his vocation at the World Health Organization, serving as the Western Pacific regional office advisor of malaria, and other vector-borne and parasitic diseases from 2000 until 2007. Subsequently, he advanced to the post of a WHO representative for the American Samoa, Cooks Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tokelau territories. In his career-related endeavors, Dr. Palmer has co-authored such works as, "Control of Schistosoma Mekongi in Cambodia: Results of Eight Years of Control Activities in the Two Endemic Provinces" in 2007, "Control of Schistosomiasis in China" in 2005 and "Malaria Risk: Estimation of the Malaria Burden" in 2005, among many others.

Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Palmer pursued an education at the University of Connecticut, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in zoology, followed by a Master of Public Health in medical entomology and virology from Yale University in 1979. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in tropical medicine in 1982. As a commitment to his field, he has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Palmer has volunteered for the United States Peace Corps.

Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Palmer is most proud of his work with WHO and their impact on the containment of malaria in Asia and the Pacific regions. Reflecting on a long career, he attributes much of his success to his mentors, who guided him in his specialty and in his research of the malaria vaccine. Looking toward the future, Dr. Palmer aspires to continue mentoring students who are interested in the field of public health and tropical medicine.
