A global entrepreneur who resided in China from 1997 to 2019, Mr. Motola is an experienced underwriter and reinsurance expert who worked for several Fortune 500 insurers. While abroad, he garnered significant cross-border experience in Asia and Latin America. He also is recognized by U.S. and foreign MNCs for his contributions and frequently networked with several U.S. and foreign dignitaries. Moreover, Mr. Motola simultaneously earned recognition as Chubb & Son's Shanghai chief representative and director for the Chubb School of Insurance, Chubb & Son, (now merged with ACE) between 1997 and 1999.
Mr. Motola spent the earlier portion of his career as a senior commercial lines underwriter at INA and Cigna Insurance in New York. He subsequently became a manager of special projects upon joining Occidental Fire & Casualty Insurance Company in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1985 to 1987 and as the chief executive officer and founder at AFM Associates Ltd. in the Greater Research Triangle Park Area of North Carolina, between 1987 and the present. Looking toward the future, Mr. Motola aspires to use his experiences to benefit and impact university students as they prepare to enter the workforce. His company recently sponsored and held a panel discussion event about the Future of Work at UNC Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School. He united academics, business and government thought leaders who considered potential socio-economic and human resource implications of a new, agile workforce working remote, hybrid and potentially as independent contractors.
Through his community, Mr. Motola has been a member of Rotary International and a member and risk management panelist for the American Chamber of Commerce in China. He has also been active by sponsoring various events for nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and China. Furthermore, Mr. Motola has raised money to support local schools, libraries, and surgeries for children with cleft palates.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Motola earned a Bachelor of Arts in public health and education at York College at City University of New York in 1976. He also received a diploma from the College of Insurance. To remain aware of developments in his field, Mr. Motola is a professional member of the Professional Insurance Agents, the Health Insurance Underwriters Association, and the Insurance Institute of America.
