Dr. Petrescu received Rochester Regional Health's Top Performance in Patient Care Experience Award, and Teaching Faculty of the Year Award.

Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in internal medicine and primary care, Dr. Petrescu is recognized for founding and serving as chief executive officer of Athena Direct Primary Care & Lifestyle Medicine, where she also is a physician. She founded the first and only direct primary care clinic in the Rochester, NY metropolitan area as an alternative to the traditional insurance-based corporate-style primary care. With expertise in both inpatient and outpatient medicine, she strives to provide comprehensive, personalized primary care services with a focus on evidence-based medicine and creating partnerships with patients to achieve the best health outcomes. Adjacent to her work with patients, Dr. Petrescu is also a skilled instructor, having served on the teaching faculty of the Rochester General Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program for more than a decade, and is part of the Institute for Healthcare's Leadership in Healthcare.
Prior to founding Athena Direct Primary Care & Lifestyle Medicine in 2021, Dr. Petrescu was a physician champion in the HTN Project and Practice Quality Improvement and an internal medicine physician at Rochester Regional Health's Genesee Health Services. Previously, she held a variety of patient-facing positions at Rochester General Hospital, including lead physician at the Rochester General Medical Group Procedure Clinic, internal medicine attending physician in the outpatient department, and lead physician in the OPD/Twig Hypertension Clinic. Additionally, she was involved with the hospital's Clinical Competence Committee RGH Internal Medicine Residency Program and chaired the Ambulatory Care Resident Curriculum in its Internal Medicine Residency Program.
Dr. Petrescu's performance in the field was born of her academic journey, which spanned Romania and the United States. She first sought an education at the Costache Negruzzi National College in Iasi, Romania, before obtaining her M.D. at Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2001, where she published a dissertation titled "Breast Cancer Advanced Therapies." She completed 4 years of general surgery residency at St. Spiridon University Hospital, also in Romania, before relocating to the U.S. in 2007. She completed internship and internal medicine residency training at Rochester General Hospital. She was elected by her peers to serve as the ambulatory Chief Medical Resident in 2011. She also served as an academic hospitalist at Rochester General Hospital. She is triple board certified by the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons, the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, is a certified physician executive by the American Association for Physician Leadership, and is a PCMH NCQH Level Three Certified Provider. She is licensed to practice internal medicine in New York.
Noted for her contributions in the field, Dr. Petrescu has received several awards, including Rochester Regional Health's Top Performance in Patient Care Experience Award, Teaching Faculty of the Year Award for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, RGHS Excellence in Action Award for HTN Clinic Performance, and Resident of the Year Award for the Rochester General Hospital Emergency Department. Additionally, she took first place in the 2011 Rochester Citywide Poster Competition.
When not practicing medicine, Dr. Petrescu enjoys spending time with her spouse and their two sons, as well as listening to classical music, playing piano, appreciating fine art and participating in outdoor activities like skiing, hiking and camping. In the coming years, she looks forward to continuing to build upon the foundation she has created with Athena Direct Primary Care & Lifestyle Medicine and developing new partnerships to expand its role in the Rochester community.
